Glad to hear no one was hurt. We were in Sol Maya when a gas tank exploded last Christmas, but fortunately the developer was on the roof and turned off the larger tanks. The palapas caught fire but were supposed to have been treated against fire. Even though palapas are really nice they are extremely susceptible to fire. Good to know too that all the people were OK. Belongings can be replaced.

Thanks for the photos James... looks like the sea breeze was aiming in the direction of those huts at Costa del Mar... and it took out the best ones. When I logged on at 2am and saw the early posts, my first thoughts were the fire dancers. Glad to see no one was hurt.
On the brighter side, Dave at the Abyss Dive Shop can realize some good karma today and PlayaInfo too, since the webcam was no longer mounted on their old structure at the ******. I'm sure there are some that wish the entire complex had burned to the ground. Too bad the good guys at El Pirata & Costa del Mar had to share in the misfortune. So, looks like dancing shifts to Mambo Cafe and La Santanara... Jimmy Last edited by JimmyMN : 01-21-2006 at 09:02 PM. |

****** burns
Now that's a fire show! The Dragon bar at the BP was gutted last night by fire that apparently was touched off by the fire dancing show. I didn't see the actual start of the blaze, but there was a strong on-shore wind and it started right above the fire dancers stage. 30 minutes and the entire palapa framwork collapsed. The Costa del Mar next door lost the adjacent row of palapas and their bar lost the roof.

It's been my experience that it won't take long at all for the folks at both places to be back at business "as usual". I've never met a bunch of more resiliant people than these! I'll be quaffing at the Pirate (and probably the parrot too) in a few weeks, even if it's sitting on an orange crate with an umbrella for shade!
It's great to hear nobody was hurt. |
