Me, and 2 of my sister-in-laws were there last night. We went specifically for the fire show which started at 11:30. They were in the finale of the show when one of the guy's rope fires flung out of his hand and landed on the front part of the palapa roof. He ran to get some help, but no one would listen to him. The breeze was SO strong last night it didn't take long for the fire to jump to the upper level roof. Then the smoke billowed into the bar area of the ****** and FINALLY the people started to leave the area. We were standing watching from the beach. It was VERY scary because the breeze was picking up large pieces of grass fire and sailing them through the air towards First Ave. The worst part was when the bottles of booze started to explode. THen I didn't know if there would be other gas that I wasn't aware that might explode. It was a HOT fire. We walked up towards fifth and there were policia and firemen everywhere. IT seemed to take them FOREVER to get to the fire, but I"m sure that the grass was up in flames in 5 minutes. I saw the entire thing happen, so if you want any other first hand info, just let me know.

Well, when I tell my sisters-in-law that I'm taking them to see a fireshow, they know I mean it! It has been a great vacation so far, but I'm still in shock to see the whole thing happen!! It was SO SAD to watch!! And I know they worked their tails off getting that place up and running. The bad thing was that no one would listen to the guy when he was telling them about the fire because they couldn't see it when they were standing inside by the bar.

If they are up and running in 3 weeks when I get there, I will do my part by patronizing them and drinking numerous cervezas. I was really looking forward to getting up that way on an almost daily basis to quench my thirst on those walks on the beach. Glad no one was hurt and hope they get back on their feet and back in business shortly. Wonder if this means the end of the fire shows?

Wow, what a shock. We were just there a week ago enjoying the fire show at el Pirata(couldn't pay me enough to go to ******, lol But I think i'm just too old for that!!) I'm so bummed for them. More people out of work, and there has been enough of that already from the hurricane. Glad to hear no one was hurt!!

I can't believe it...... was hoping it was just another rumor..... thanks for the reality pictures James...... El Pirata was my favorite place for food/drinks/ good day at the beach..... they have the best staff..... I even heard Reuben was promoted to manager.... sure hope they rebuild..... the great staff there made it a favorite hang-out for many of us peeps and they have become our friends over the years.... it is always my first place to go after checking in at the hotel, my first day there.... here's hoping they rebuild.....

Glad to hear noone was hurt. What a shame. After making it through Wilma then this happens. From reading on this forum for a while now, it seems the local business people stick together during times like this. I'm sure it will be up and running in no time!
