I am very happy to hear nobody was hurt. However, I'm very surprised the ****** wasn't better equiped to handle this. I would think they would have a pretty good plan in hand if this were to happen. Hmmmmm....lets see....fire being thrown around and a straw roof....hmmmm...wow didn't see that coming.

I have no doubt they will rebuild quickly. Mexico seems to be very good at building and repairing in a very reasonable amount of time. I guess you have to be when you have hurricanes.

Move to the Door

I've always watched for an exit where ever the fire dancers perforned. I, however, expected this at Tutix before it blew away rather than the parrot.

Ha! Like the title of your post! I have started alerting the media! See you soon!

Doesn't seem like they had the fire protected palapas. Isn't there a fine for not having the fire protection? They should be held responsible for all of the damage. I also thought about the parrots at Pirata. I hope someone grabbed the cage or got them out.

Ahhhh...we have hurricanes here in Florida, and I can tell you that we are NOT very good at building and repairing in a very reasonable amount of time! The key word here is MEXICO....

We just got home from Playa, it seems that many living there were just waiting for a fire to happen. It was very windy the night of the fire, which I am sure got those flames big and hot! The very last thing we did before getting on the Cozumel ferry (flying home) was to buy the Playa Bomberos t-shirts, proceeds going to Playa del Carmen fire dept. I understand they did the best they could do in the given situation.

Rebuilding a house and rebuilding a palapa are 2 different things. Plus waiting for insurance paperwork and settlements and permits..etc...I doubt that Cancun is back to 100%.

We are very saddened to hear of the fire. Many a fond memory of the ****** exist in our family. Pictures from our family album say a thousand words!( )

Glad that no one was injured. That is a blessing!
However, fire and palapa's do not mix (especially with a strong wind)! Hopefully, they will rebuild, as all have done or are doing since Wilma.

We still shall look forward to seeing all of Playa in just a few short weeks! Get me out of here!!!!!

We are heading down to PDC in a few weeks and are very sad the fire destroyed the Dragon bar. We planned to take our family there for a drink and to enjoy the view. I guess we will have to look for another place to go.

Those pictures sure make you stop and think - it's a miracle nobody was hurt.

I would like to think you are right Sarah, but all those huge beams gone from the huge palapa? It's not like just re-doing the frond part over a frame, the frame is gone,or so it looks to be.I hope you are right tho,and we can visit the "parrot" in Feb.

You won't need to search long or far. Carlos... aka Charlie... hasn't worked at El Pirata for almost a year now. He now works at Coco Maya which is located next door to the ****** (opposite side as El Pirata). It's a better job for him in terms of money and he's doing just great.
