Caba-roke!
Bruno (of Cabalova, corner 12th Street and 5th Ave) has a Karaoke machine now and Tuesdays have been designated the night.
Last time I went I ended up doing falsetto duets with DJ. They have really good sushi, as you probably already know, so swing on by.

Okey dokey karaoke!
I am SO sorry to have missed what I'm sure was a fine performance, James. But, then, you weren't in attendance when Michele the vet, Soraya and I sang "Brandy." That was quite, uh, something.
At Java Joe's the next morning, I confessed that I wasn't sure what had come over me because I don't sing karaoke, and was told, "Yes ... and you still don't." This person, who shall remain nameless but is known for his Elvis renditions (okay, it was Bob), was then cautioned by Bruno to never, ever mangle "Born in the U.S.A." in his establishment again, so my honor was somewhat redeemed. But seriously, folks, it's all in good fun, the sushi is sabroso, and you couldn't find a better host than Bruno. If you can carry a tune, you'll have an advantage over most of us, so check it out ... |

Apparently last night Robert Plant was singing karaoke at Cabalova. I hear he's here for a week.

James,
I know this is crazy even asking, but maybe you can help me out with this one. I should have asked a long time ago, but you bringing up Robert Plant brought it back to mind. In May '01, there was a rock group at, I believe, Pez Vela that were doing Led Zepplin music, a little Doors, and Bob Seger. I was especially impressed with the vocals, cause NOBODY can sing like Robert Plant. The lead vocalist in this group was impressive! I didn't know if they were a house group or just booked for the week or what. But I'd love to know who they are. I know this is ridiculous, but does anybody know????? |

Dale, I think they are kind of a house band. They are probably listed on the image from the Quinta Live show the other week, posted in this forum.
I had lunch with my friend Pete Davis today (Dorado fillet over mashed potatoes with broccoli and mushrooms in garlic and butter at Babes!!!) and he mentioned he had a brush with greatness the other day. His travelogue is on his site. That's Pete with Robert Plant, of the Honey Drippers and some other band... what was it called? ![]() From Robert's t-shirt, he's no doubt been hanging out at the Abyss.... he should have gotten the Playa Deal Card for deep discounts.

Thanks James,
If that's the group I saw at Pez Vela and there name is Deja Vu....what can I say?... excellent name! Best Robert Plant impression I ever heard. He didn't do bad on Jim Morrison either, although I'm not a Doors fan. I hope that dude from the Honey Drippers, and whatever that other group is, got to hear them. I think he might be impressed. Sure wish I had been around Playa to meet Robert Plant. I would have bought him a Playa Deal Card myself. Ok, it's time to get the Led out! |

:o Ohhh, my heart, I can't take this much excitement!! To think that Robert Plant has walked down the same streets and swum at the same beach as I have!! i wonder where he stayed? One of the posh resorts like Ikal del Mar, or some isolated villa?
Sadly, I'm not sure I would have recognized him...he seems to have put on a few poinds since I last saw him live (No Quarter tour), and aging hippies are pretty commonplace in Playa... 8) |

Thanks James
James,
Man, my site is just a few weeks old, I've got most of it still under construction, and now you slam me with all this traffic :o Thanks, though. Robert Plant was very cool. A very nice guy. Not my only brush with fame down here, though. In fact, in my first week here (about 4 and a half years ago when I moved down and have since left), I saw Farrah Fawcett down at Casa Cenote. She was with two kids (hers??) and some guy. She was incognito, but hey, it's Farah. I had the posters as a kid. She can't hide that easily. Also have seen Tim Allen and others. The highlight however (sorry if this offends the ladies) was the playboy shoot on the beach, though. Pete |

karaoke still going?
Is the karaoke still going? If so, I'm marking my calendar for June 10, which is the first Tuesday we'll be in PdC. We couldn't find any karaoke when we were there in November. What time does it start?

Plant has played with quite a variety of groups over the years. The Crawling King Snakes, Tennessee Teens, Mad Dogs, Band of Joy, Whoopee Cushions, Hobbstweedle, New Yardbirds, Honey Drippers, and best known of course for Led Zeppelin. For the last few years, he's been either out of the loop altogether, or performing primarily as a solo act. (I don't claim to have known all that, by the way. I admit to have done some digging.)
