We had them at the place Heather recommends in another thread, Delia's, I think on 4th and 20th- no sign - check out her thread for more specific info- I thought they were very good- 3 empanadas, beans, rice and fresh squeezed OJ for 30 pesos when we were there.

If you really like getting off the beaten path... I found a tiny restaurant that specialized in empanadas only. It was way north on the west side of 30th Avenue around Calle48 or so. Haven't been there in roughly a year, so couldn't say if it's still there. I'll probably take a stroll up that way in early March and hopefully provide better details before you arrive.

Doña Empañadas is on 15th, near Calle 4, I think. It's real good, but our favorite is Antojitos Danny. It's a tiny blue booth with 4 stools in front, on the right on 10th Ave. as you're walking into Playa from Playacar, about a block before you get to Juarez. Cheese, chicken, and "meat" empañadas for 4 pesos. Made right in front of you. Good eats.

All in the interests of research (the things I'll do for you people), I made a quick stop today at the empanada cart on 8th street between 10 and 15 (beside Plaza Pelicanos). I had both a cheese empanada and a chicken empanada. The chicken was far superior, but for 8 pesos, I had a terrific breakfast. Oh, and don't believe the lady when she tells you the salsa is only "un poco" hot.

I've had empanada's from a vendor on 5th and Juarez in the evening a few times. Maybe it is the same guy Heather is referring to, very nice guy, loves to talk to people. I remeber them being 8 pesos also. In the evening a lady right next to him from time to time also sells tamales. Both very good quick snack, but usually not there until after 5 or 6 in the evening, and not there every night.

I've heard Dona Empenadas has closed. It would be a great shame if this were so, as they were FANTASTIC. The owner and I had talked about my buying the place from her, but the deal never went through. (I was planning to franchise up here to Houston, as well!)

We had a chance to try empanadas on 8th Heather recomended they are really good the pollo is the best. Be careful of the salsa picante it is really good but will sneak up on you and sweat will be pouring from your forhead. Drop by and try something local you will probably be the only non spanish speaker at the cart and will have a great cheap food experience.
