Generally speaking NO do not drink the water. That being said, I do brush my teeth with it. There are some restaurants that have purified tap water and some of the AIs do as well. Most of the boutique hotels do not. Now I think James has mentioned the Playa does treat it's water. Now I don't know to what extent it is treated and if the water mains are sanitary. I know that my friends that are native to Mexico do not drink it. I had a terrible time in June trying to remember not to fill the ice trays from the sink and to use bottled water. Just force of habit to turn the faucet on. I have been told that ice is purified. This I would tend to believe as a company maufacturing ice would probabley want to filter all impurities out as to not clog their machinery with impurities like lime. I have never been sick in Mexico and we have probably been some 15 times. (Knock on wood).

If you were at a restaurant, chances are that you ate something too and then there's no knowing exactly what made you sick. People ask about the water, ice cubes, salads, if the food in town is dangerous etc, but my personal opinion is that the most 'dangerous' thing you can eat is a buffet that's been sitting out in tropical heat for hours (which is the usual AI thing). I'd say that no restaurant in town would serve tap water, it's all purified.

When we were living in Playa, a certain someone told me it was okay to brush my teeth with the water. We were living in a condo with a roof sistern, like most condos have, I imagine. Well, I got a bug (confirmed Dr. diagnosis) and ended up very sick. I can only attribute it to the water I was brushing my teeth with, as no one else got sick and it definately wasnt' from any food. When I told another important and well-respected playa-knowledgeable member of this forum about it in Playa, I got the, "Oh no! I wouldn't brush my teeth with that water!" I'll only listen to his godliness from now on!But YMMV. Most hotels have purified water systems, I'd think. And it probably makes a difference if you are on city water system, and not cistern? I dunno. |

About 95% of the time when you get sick from food, it's from your own home. The average home kitchen is more unsanitary than a commercial one. Think how often you continate and cross contminate. For example have you ever dried your dishes with a dishtowel. Why did you wash them? You just spread bacteria all over your clean dishes. It is better to let them air dry. Do you use a sponge on your counter tops? Bad, very bad! A sponge is just a haven for bacteria. We always blame the restaurant we just ate at, when in reality it generally take about 48 hours to develop food sickness. So it probably wasn't the restaurant you ate at tonight or yesterday but your kitchen the day before yesterday.
