La Fortuna - New owners, great food
A few months ago Adolfo and Rosa sold La Fortuna (corner of calle 8 and Ave. 10) to a nice young couple. She, Alicia, is Mexican and he, Mario, is Italian. We have eaten there twice in the past month or so and have been very impressed. The menu is fairly large and varied which originally concerned me until I learned that Mario honed is skills for several years on a cruise ship. Everything we have eaten has been just top notch and reasonably priced. He really knows how to cook meat to the specified temp., a skill difficult to find here. There are many cuts of meat available, chicken dishes, seafood and pasta. The fried calamari app. is fabulous. They have some decent wines by the bottle, (not so good by the glass), and prices on the wine list are in line with other restaurants in Playa.
Best of all, they are just a really nice couple, people you want to help succede in a business that can be so brutal. It's now called "Don Mario". Check it out. |

I second this recommendation; I didn't even know it was still called La Fortuna, but my darling bf and I have eaten there a few times. Good each time! I had a very nice fish filet (mero, which is grouper, I think) with steamed veggies and bf got the arrachera. Their soups are also terrific, I had the Azteca soup with chicken and tortilla strips. They bring crema to put in it, yummy!
I'm starting to realize that I eat out too much. |

The food is great. Had flank steak, fries and caesar salad for $9. He is great to watch in the kitchen, nothing leaves the kitchen until he takes a look at it. My sister liked the place so much, she ate there twice. Wish he had a webcam in the kitchen.
Enjoy. |
