Hope you remembered to pack the Manitoba Mud. It'll make getting up at 4:30 AM on that Sunday morning almost bearable.

Glad you and Jackie are happily in residence in Playa once again. See you in less than 10 days!

Hee-hee...she doesn't know me yet, does she Peeps? The "padding" I refer to,W8, doesn't have to be packed. You've obviously not met me. I'm generously proportioned and very well upholstered, though not like I was. The padding is attached, and extremely portable. I'm sorry if you'll have to deal with some artificial substitute solution to the hard bed issue, but take heart in the fact that you're slim.

Yep, It'll be there. We're searching for a suitable local clay deposit right now. We figured there was no way we'd ever get that through customs, so we didn't even try. Don't know if the brew will be up to our usual standard, since the Playa dirt won't have that buffalo poop residue component, or Red River tang, but we'll do the best we can.

Day 2 - Tuesday 02/14 Valentines Day - Big Deal! Another phoney "holiday" propogated by Hallmark, FTD Florists, and Cadbury/Nestle/Rowntree.

Slept in until about 8:00, which is pretty late for me, but now I know where Mrs. B gets her sleeping habits. She hit the deck about 9:30, and at that she was ahead of her mom. Down to La Cueva del Chango for their predictably excellent breakfast. Ran into Mr. & Mrs. DiBiggs there. Noticed plenty of construction and development as we made our way there. Vacant lots that were barely cleared last year are condos this year. The paving stones are well past La Cueva this year, but fortunately not so far as to cut into the field of play for the upcoming Beach O-LIMP-XX,which was a concern. The beach we'll be using for the games is in great shape right now, and we hope it will stay that way. Only major change is that the little breeze they had down this way a while back pretty effectively pruned/removed some of the trees, so shade will be at a premium in O-LIMP-XX Stadium. Wear a hat, Peeps. We walked by Mamitas, and there was still chairs and shade available, though the really prime spots were gone. This was about 11:00. El Tukan Beach Club was in operation as well.

Walked over to the Walmart and dropped a quick 1,000 pesos on our initial stock-up of groceries. Best selection of fruit, vegetables, and groceries we've seen in one place in Playa. Even better than Chedraui. Prices seemed to be in line, or at least they didn't shock us. I'd say the customers were about 75% locals. At the check-outs, most of the carts seemed to be primarily full of groceries, as opposed to other merchandise. I rather think this heralds big trouble for San Francisco, a couple of blocks away, especially with the huge commercial development going up right next door to them, which I understand is another major retailer. It's gigantic, and being built where the baseball stadium used to be, so I don't know where "the boys of summer" ply their trade now. Taxi home (Shlep, shlep, grunt, grunt!).

Up to the pool on the roof for a swim, but thought better of it. Too darned cold for that foolishness. Encountered Forum Peeps Bill & Deb from Ottawa and their civilian compadres. Enjoyed a few libations by the pool. Found at the end of the day that there was 1 Corona and 1 Negra Mondelo in the fridge. I know I bought a dozen cerveza! Somebody is drinking it! Mrs. B didn't have any. Her mom claims she only drinks gin & tonic, but I think I best start searching her. U-m-m-m, nah, on second thought...I think I'll just buy more beer.

Dinner at the condo and then wandered down to the Tequila Barrel, where there was meant to be a Peep Meet. Got there about 9:00ish, but there was no obvious "group" in evidence, except a seedy-looking bunch in the corner of the back room, who we declined to approach. Not that their questionable appearance inhibited us - some of the most fun Forum Peeps we've met are pretty disreputable - but the music back there was much too loud for human endurance. We were the only ones in the place wearing the instantly-recognizeable Nerak beads, as near as we could tell, so we had our first margarita of the trip - just an average offering- and were home before 11:00. Another early night, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Day 3 - Wednesday 02/15

Up reasonably early because we plan on beaching it, conditions allowing, and we want to get a decent spot at Mamitas. Jackie's mom likes the beach. Pretty solid overcast and darned cool, so they decided against La Playa. Tried to take an early dip in the pool, but since my membership in the Polar Bear Club has lapsed, I changed my mind, when I saw an iceberg floating by looking for the Titanic. The foot I dipped in to test the temperature will almost certainly recover, so the necessity of amputation is unlikely, and besides, I look good in blue.

Spoke to the resident caretaker, Jose, about our malfunctioning coffee maker, as we had to get that dealt with well in advance of the Sunrise Celebration during Peep Fest. Good thing sign language is universal. Jose's English is limited, and my Spanglish sucks. Also picked up another carboy of aqua. (Shlep, shlep, grunt, grunt - 3 floors.) I generally send Mrs.B down with the empty jug. Though a slight little thing, she's quite capable of handling the burden of a full carboy, but the macho chauvinist Jose wouldn't think of having her do it. Gotta' love Latins. He invariably transports the load upstairs and installs it while I stay out of view. It's not that I'm lazy, but he's in better shape than I ever was, and 30 years younger. See...like they say, old and sneaky beats young and fit every time. Anyway, after the water carrier incident, I strolled down the street to the PlayaInfo office to find everyone out but the charming Elsa and her sitter. I was about to leave when Heather returned from her errands, and was the recipient of the second Bumper hug of the current adventure. That's 2 down and about eleventy-nine to go. Good thing I brought plenty. I was really looking forward to this one, and wasn't disappointed. Heather is utterly engaging and extremely huggable. I like this job! She advised me the elusive pool noodles for the Beach O-LIMP-XX had been procurred (Thanks, Mitch.), so that's one less thing to worry about.

Mrs.B had headed off for a visit to the Xaman Ha Aviary and a walkabout in Playacar. Jackie said that while it was still worthwhile, she remembered it as being better and the price has jumped dramatically from 80 pesos to 150. Still a good day, though. I dropped into my favourite internet joint on 24th between 5th and 1st to catch up, post Day 1 of this tedious account, and check our mail. Nothing interestng in the mail, but at least no bills. Pizza and Dos Equis at Pizza Renzo around the corner on 5th between 24th and 26th. Not up to Pizza Pazzaz, but not bad. 10 pesos for a generous slice and 15 for the beer, so a big lunch was 35 pesos.

Uneventful afternoon then out for dinner at Babe's new location on 5th between 28th and 30th. Two kinds of spring rolls up front, then Pad Thai, and Thai chicken. All up to their usual high standard. This is a very small place. Only seats about 20 - 25 and doesn't open until 4:00 PM. Still great value and worth a visit. 3 cocktails, 2 appetizers, 3 entrees, leftovers for lunch tomorrow - 440 pesos, plus tip. Afer numerous recommendations, including one earlier today from Luna Blue Tony, I ordered a blueberry margarita. I wouldn't bother again. You generate a lot of stares from other patrons as this mountain of blue/purple slush in a marg glass makes its way to your table, but after that, it's pretty much a non-event. Might as well go to the corner 7-11 and get a Slurpee - at least you would get to keep the glass. I guess some folks like them though. Mom-In-Law was running on empty, so home early.

No Bumper I have not met you yet, but hope to someday! But I am not by any means a slim & trim person. I've got quite the padding myself, unfortunately that's not enough and those hard beds can be a killer on the hips & back. I guess I will take the tips from fellow posters about heading to Wal-Mart. Thanks for your reply, have a fantastic time in PDC, looking forward to the rest of your reports. I have learned so much from everyone that posts here.

Oh no! I missed out on a chance to meet the legendary Bumper! The meet on the 14th was at the Beer Bucket (Tequila Barrel was the 11th) - having said that, we were a small group (the count on the thread was up to about 40 but I think we maxed out at 12 quality individuals!)

Might see you around town still, I'll be wearing my beads just in case!
