The Bumper's 2006 Playa Odyssey

Day 1 - Monday, 02/13

Transition Day - Home to Away

Up at 3:30 AM. Might as well be, wasn't sleeping anyway. Can you say "eager?" 4:30 cab pickup. Despite the many horror stories we've heard about other folk's misadventures with Northwest,we had another completely positive experience with them - touch wood. Mother-In-Law met us at the airport. She's spending the first 10 days of the trip with us. It was my idea. I'm going directly to Heaven when I die. No stay in Purgatory, no interview at the Golden Gates, no checking the records of my days on earth, no qualifying tests, right to the fast lane, do not pass GO, do not collect $200.

Monday is definitely the day to head to Playa. By Cancun standards, the airport was deserted. Got to immigration and was only 4th in line and breezed through in minutes. Small snag at customs as we has checked the "Yes" box on the food products question. Altogether too honest - it's a repressed Canadian thing. Despite our green light, they had to see the "cooking spices" we had declared. Mrs.B has had some problems getting what she wants down here so packs her own. They went through all the various bags, bottles and little plastic bags and ended up confiscating the heads of garlic and ginger root. They're in for a Hell of a shock if they try to smoke that stuff. No decent high and heartburn to die from. As always, the Ado/Riviera bus went off without a hitch. Still 70 pesos from the airport to the Playa bus terminal. Walked past 6 cabs to get to a station wagon one,and even that was barely capable of handling our cubic amount of luggage. We checked with the airline to find we're allowed 2 bags each at 50 lbs max. So,we had 4 bags at 45 to 50 lbs. Plus our carry-ons and bag-o-booze from the duty free. Cab fare inside zone 1 is 14 pesos but I gave him a 20 for the baggage handling. Usual routine at Las Palmas, with the freight, but this time all the way to the third floor. Shlep, shlep, grunt, grunt, with willing assistance from Jose, the resident caretaker. He earns his sizeable tip. Off next door to the mini super for 2 bottles each of the 6 brands of cerveza they stock, and 4 Coke Lights - 146 pesos.

High point of the day was dropping into the Luna Blue across the street and introducing myself to the well-known innkeepers,Tony & Cheri. It was a genuine pleasure to meet them. Dispensed my first Bumper hug of the trip to Cheri - a thoroughly delightful experience. Tony had to settle for a sincere warm handshake. Not that I'm averse to hugging guys, and goodness knows Tony begged, but I was concerned that our whiskers might become entangled. I'm certainly impressed with the job T & C have done with refurbishing the old Zanzibar. It's come a long way indeed, and while they've still got things to do to make the dramatic re-development complete - they have ambitious plans - they can be justifiably proud of their progress. From what I've seen so far, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Luna Blue as a place to hang your hat.

Dinner at La Riviera on 5th between 24th and 26th. We've been regulars here because the food has always been excellent, but the service sucked. Well, they've apparently addressed the service issue,as it was quite good, but the food was average to below average at best. All 3 of us held that opinion, so we won't be back. There's just too many other options available to put up with anything less than superb.

Supposedly it's been cooler than usual the last few days, and I wished I'd worn a sweater or jacket, as it was brisker than we expected. But,still significantly warmer than at home, with a noticeable lack of snow. 3:30 AM was a very long time ago,so we were down for the count very early. Standard Mexican mattress, by the way, ie: Hard as Hell, but I bring my own padding.

Bumper, I love your trip report so far. But one question....what kind of padding do you pack for the hard beds? How does it fit in your suitcase? Looking forward to more of your report!

Great reporting, Bumper! I'm sure we'll be meeting you and the Mrs. next week. We'll be over at the Luna Blue! See you 'round! And keep the reports coming. Is it still chilly at night? I'm bringing all tank tops. Better pack a couple of sweaters too!
