wouldn't it be beneficial to at least grade out the cliff to have a smooth path down to the ocean shore? also, does anybody go through and clean up the shore from time to time when it gets like this? seaweed and trash and rocks, etc.?

The plan (from my post several weeks ago) was to grade the beach beginning this week. That plan has been postponed for now (it seems) There was concern about bringing in heavy equipment during high season in addition to the disaster on 10th. A double whammy. And yes, they do clean the beach of trash and seaweed. Rocks, not so much. |

Instead of bringing in new sand ,they could suck up a lot of the sand that has gotten washed out a few hundered yards and re-blow that onto the beach that would help remove some of those tons and tons of sand that has been swept back on or near the reefs . This is what they are doing in other places to help remedy both isssues... Cancun, Mexico Federal and state governments in Mexico have invested about $71 million dollars ($957 million pesos) throughout the state of Quintana Roo in restoring the beaches along Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Cozumel. Hurricane Wilma hit the beaches of Cancun and the Riviera Maya in 2005. The initial nourishment project was unsuccessful, leading to a second round that began in September 2009, and was scheduled to complete in early 2010. The project designers and the government committed to invest in beach maintenance to address future erosion. Project designers considered factors such as the time of year and sand characteristics such as density. Restoration in Cancun was expected to deliver 1.3 billion US gallons (4,900,000 m3) of sand to replenish 450 meters (1,480 ft) of coastline. This time, the beach is promised to last at least 10 years. Looks like they were off by about 8 yrs ..IMO.. Last edited by D33RHUNT3R; 02-27-2012 at 12:23 PM.. |

The wind has shifted to the north-east and beach is indeed accreting in front of Playa Maya today, Steve. Not the lofty 6 foot high beach reclamation left behind, but a gently slope of sand covering the rocks. And the seaweed? It's all down at Fusion now, carried away from Playa Maya on the waves. Sorry, Moke.

thanks for the update YWGDonandDeb. I wish you had some more pictures to show me the difference now compared to a couple of days ago, but I'll just have to visualize it. Staying at Luna Encantada and it appears like that part of the beach is the most eroded consistently in the photos I've seen on this forum.
Just hoping it changes when I'm there from May 4th to the 14th.....and yes I know I'm being selfish.

Id be curious to see what fusion looks like and the beach directly in front of fusion today...I've heard they have their lounge chairs and tables packed in like sardines due to the cliff that keeps getting closer to the restaurant.

That said, you can't wait forever, and so yesterday our own workers did go out and take care of some in front of our property. Hopefully a response will be forthcoming on this point, and if so, we'll post it here. It is hard to imagine, however, that if they're not keeping up with just the routing cleaning of seaweed, they're nevertheless prepared to come in with big machines and regrade the beach... |

When we were at the Barcelo Palace last week, their seaweed cleaning machine was broken for a couple of days and I could not believe how much seaweed accumulated in a short time.
Wow! I don't recall seeing much seaweed at all in this area on previous trips.
