Is there any bad rip currents on the PDC area beaches right now?

Im curious if I should watch out for these when I am on the beach. I know it can be bad on the Pacific side, but how is it on the Carribean side?

Ok - now I'm freaked out about letting my little ones swim. What if I only let them go waist high? Is the tide still pretty strong at that depth? They are 4 and 6.

It's nothing like on the Pacific side. In fact, I've never felt a strong undertow in Playa - doesn't mean it never happens, just that it's not a big problem. At all. I wouldn't hesitate a minute to let my kids swim in the ocean here - supervised, of course.

4 and 6? They probably aren't tall enough to get far enough out to get caught in one. I grew up on the Gulf of Mexico and the Alabama coast has a lot more than Playa. As a matter of fact I've been to Playa 12, 13 times over the last 8 years and I have never experienced being in one. Just remember if you get caught in one don't panic turn and swim parralel to the beach to swim out of it. They are typically not very large 20 to 30 feet wide. Once you've swam out turn toward the beach and swim in.

Whew.....thanks. It sure is a lot more stressful planning a vacation that includes your kids so much to think/worry about.

Yup, all you have to do is swim parallel passed the break in the sandbar. It can be pretty frightning though because the water moves at 5MPH or more...

The current off the shelf between Playa and Cozumel is between 9 knots and 13. It is very swift. Not that you would be out that far unless SCUBA diving. Which if you are not paying attention you will find yourself surfacing quite a ways from your party. In these situations there is usually another dive bout around that will bring you back to your party.

Wow, that is pretty interesting. I would have thought that you would have to try and swim under it as Tommy said or swim further away from the beach to avoid it. I am glad this topic came up!

There were quite a few kids that age swimming & having a great time when we were there. We are bringing our 3 & 6 year olds next time...We will bring their life jackets of course & they won't be swimming alone so I am not worried in the least. Most times they like to hang out at shore & build in the sand anyway...

I've never experienced a rip current in Playa. Side-shore currents, yes. Rip, never.
