New, reasonable restaurant

Don Mario's, Calle 8 & 10 AV, across from Diez, has great food and inexpensive prices. The Italian chef prepares a guilt free scalopini from pork, 90 pesos; fish filet 75 pesos, shrimp, pasta, and steaks. A bottle of a decent Chilean Cabernet, 150 pesos. We went our last two days in a row. Tell Alicia we said hello.

Don't rub it in!! We got the recommendation from several locals and stopped by on several occasions going from table to table polling their guests. The flank steak seemed to be in high demand and looked pretty appetizing too. We just weren't hungry at the time and then time ran out...

Also had hoped to sample the goods from the VW-Bus Food Cart out front of La Santenera. We ordered meat from there one night to feed Monster, but it worried me that he seemed to reject it. Got a 50/50 from the drunks leaving the cart at 2am, so not the ultimate sampling profile.

Mario used to work as a chef on the cruisers and Alicia is the Mexican half of the equation . It used to be called La Fortuna ..... I know so many people that eat there on a regular basis , we are a twice a week eaters at Don Marios but donīt tell everyone or else we wonīt be able to get a table !

We tried a taco from the VW van one night. Actually, my friend bought it and I tasted it. I was pretty drunk at the time, but I do remember that it was nothing special! There were always people there everytime I went to the ATM next door (and that was A LOT!)

So....should I bring my 100% Italian husband there or what? We ate at La Rucola last summer and he wasn't impressed. I'm hoping Pasta Luego is still in business in August so we can go there...but this Don Mario's sounds great. Anyone know where Mario's from in Italy? It really DOES make a difference!

Gracias, amigo! Sorry to *put you out*! So, he's from Milan. So is Andrea from Pasta Luego. And his food was good too! We'll just have to visit BOTH!! Now we have to decide whether to spend both weeks in Playa, or one down south. My husband doesn't like staying south...he's younger than me and still likes all the action in Playa. Someday he'll mellow out!!

Thanks for the info...and hope you enjoyed your meal. BTW, what did you have?

Don Marios is great. My sister ate there twice in Feb. Flank steak, fries and caesar salad, more than I could eat, only $9. I had the corner seat looking into the kitchen and told him he needed a webcam in the kitchen. He is fascinating to watch. Nothing leaves the kitchen until he has a look at it. Enjoy. Pasta Luego is also great. Great red sauce and the girlfriend does the cooking. He also is from Milan. About the same price as Don Marios. There are sooooo many Italian eats, I could have eaten dinner every night at those Italian restaurants.

The smell as the garlic was cooking dragged a couple of strollers in ... itīs amazing how all it takes is a whif of garlic and you are so hungry.
