Groceries?

If renting a condo in town, what is the best place to get groceries when we arrive? Not a lot of stuff, just some OJ, milk, booze, stuff to make sandwiches, etc. Can I get it all at one store? I've seen a lot of people on the forum talking about walmart, but do they have cold stuff too? I'd like to get it all done in one shot, and get to the beach ASAP!

Wal-Mart will have everything you are looking for, although we thought they were a bit more pricey than Sam's or Chedrui.

It would be helpful if you indicate what part of town you'll be staying in so we might offer some advice on what is likely to be the most convenient option. Walmart definitely has the best selection, though not always the best price.

Walmart or the Cherudi (spelling??) will have what you need. The difference is Walmart will be more expensive. There's also a great butcher on 1st between 25th and 30th ave...it's a must stop if you're planning to grill out. We grocery shopped twice in a week at the large grocery...we were also able to get a few things right on 5th and had great luck on our walk (1st) to the butcher - lots of little stores with good choices. Have fun!

I think it depends where you are staying. The past two times I stayed in the same area and it was just easier and quicker to go to the neighborhood grocery.

Don't know where your renting, but we were lucky enough to have the condo arrange for some things to be there when we arrive. Quite a nice convieniece, that way we can head straight to the beach. Maybe you should ask if this is possible then all you need to do is get a list together.

groceries

We have a van that is picking us up at the airport and on the way from the airport to our condo they are stopping at Wallmart for our groceries. Cost a little extra to stop but then we have it all and don't have to worry about it the next day.

Please support the mom-and pop tiendas in town. They are close by, no waiting in lines, you get a chance to interact with locals, and the money stays in town! You're talking of maybe saving pennies after spending $100's on plane and hotel.

Isn't the grocery store (Chedrui) owned and operated by locals also??? I'm very much in favor of supporting the mom and pop shops, but what if they don't have everything I need??

Mr Chedraui lives north of Playa in Veracruz.

Walmart is the original evil empire. I have watched them drive many small home town owned shops and stores to closing there doors. Please support the local owned stores.

Walmart here is considerably more expensive than Chedraui and all the fish shops and butchers that are frequented by the locals. Little chance that the locally owned sores in Playa del Carmen will fall victim to the evil empire. Walmart is using a USA business model that includes a considerably greater profit margin. The smaller stores have no such model to adhere to.

You're on vacation, how much do you really NEED vs. what you WANT? Not to single you out at all, because we as Americans tend to do it a lot, and maybe it's spreading across the globe. But we tend to confuse the whole need/want thing. Who NEEDS a four stall garage?
