Just wanting anyones feed back on this new RIU Resort. I am told it just opened February 2006 which was not to long ago. A group of us are thinking of staying there next fall, and would like any feedback on the RUI resort area Playacar.
Thanks I am new to the board so will appreciate any help you can give me. |

just returned yesterday from riu yucatan. we took a walk thru the palace--much quieter than the yucatan, and the beach was much less crowded. it was later in the day, so we couldn't tell how busy the pool area gets (the yucatan was extremely crowded). The beach areas for both hotels are very nice, but lacking in shade (palm trees stripped of leaves during the hurricane). People got up extremely early at our hotel to nab one of the very few shaded chairs.
The Palace (and the Yucatan) was very pretty--lovely landscaping, and lots of staffpeople. We weren't allowed to eat there, so I can't tell you how the food is, but I spoke to a fellow who'd eaten there and he said the buffets were pretty much the same--lots of food, freshly prepared. |

Sea, are you talking about the Riu Palace Mexico which is next to the Yucatan or the new Riu Palace Riviera Maya which is 6 more resorts towards town? Based on reviews and pictures I've seen of the RPRM if you're a real beach lover then the Palace Mexico would be the better choice. ???

Jobob,
We looked at the Palace that is close to the Yucatan. I thought the other newer Riu was the Lupita (I may be confused). But we walked all along the beach in front of most of the hotels, and there isn't much difference in beach quality (some areas are more crowded than others). I was told the beach is actually wider than it was before the hurricane, but it's a little hard to walk in the morning, because the sand drops off, rather than a gentle slope into the water. Late in the day, when the tide was out, was better for walking. The tide did come up surprisingly far a couple of days. Very little shade anywhere along the beach--the palm trees look sad! Jimbo, Yes, unfortunately, the pool area was very crowded when we were there--the hotel was full. Arise before dawn if you want a chair under a palapa. Even chairs with no shade were pretty much all reserved by 8am. And a couple of days it was really too windy to be comfortable on the beach, with sand blowing. (One enterprising family took a trip to Walmart in town and bought a beach umbrella!) Didn't do any side trips this time; in the past I've been to Tulum, Xel-ha, Chichen Itza. Tulum/Xel-ha is a great day trip with kids. We didn't use the kids club, but I did see them on the beach a couple of times. There were about 10-12 kids with a couple of adults supervising; they seemed to be having fun. Plenty of kid-friendly food on the buffet (pizza, pastas). Let me know if you need any more info... |

Riu Lupita is not on the beach but located on a golf course. They do have shuttles to the beach though. I think it has been around for awhile and the riu bambu site should explain where the others are located. I agree about the chaise lounge situation at the Riu Yucatan. Not many available and not wanting to play the towel game we just headed to the beach.
