People really are rude!

I guess my vast world travels have made me more sensitive to this, plus I am reading a book by a Mexican-American author who harps on it all the time ...

But everyone remember to do that very important salutation before you leap into business with someone. Otherwise, you sound like a real jacka** when you don't.

Tonight I was getting dinner at Boston Market (for those who don't know, it's like a fancy polla asado place, with a lot more choices). Most of the people working there are Mexican. I have trained myself to do the salutation and make the eye contact, pleases, yesses, and thank yous, etc., and I had a very amiable experience.

As I was paying, however, two customers walked in. One was an older woman:
Server: Good evening --
Woman: Do you have any fish?
Server: (sigh) Yes.
Woman: Where?
Server points to the display, right under the woman's nose.
Woman: That's breaded. That's no good for South Beach!
Woman stomps out.

One was a man in his late 30s:
Server: Goo --
Man: All I need is a large macaroni & cheese to go.
Server sighs, eyebrows arched, and fulfills the order.

Yuck. And to be a civilized person would have taken them all of what? A few seconds?

Rude Mexican man comes to a dive shop in "playa" Tukan:

Rude Mexican man: "Mamitas?"
Dive shop attendant: "Good morning, how are you? Go up the dirt road, turn left, second right, cross two streets and you can't miss it".

Changed the title of the thread, you and Scott and Daddy B and Babaloo are all quite right.

With your kind indulgences, I will ask your forgivenesses.

There is the whole stereotyping difficulty. Stayed at White Partridge Villa in Playacar several years back and as our group arrived the property manager said "I am so glad you guys aren't Italians - the last group we had in here were from Italy and one guy didn't like the bright sunshine in his room in the AM waking him up so he went to a store and bought black paint and a brush and painted the windows in his room black." Now I thought that was very inventive, if a little extreme, but saw no relation to his being Italian.

Perhaps it may be more of a clash in cultures than rudeness?

It was our last hour in Playa. We went to El Oasis for their excellent shrimp tacos. An english speaking pregnant couple with a small child sit at the table next to us and order. A few minutes after their order arrives we hear a shrill voice screeching, "Waiter, waiter come here." Dutifully he comes over. She says in the same tone, "You didn't tell me that the green sauce was hot, I put it all over my taco, and now I can't eat it. I want another one." He stands there looking at her. She repeats it, louder. Most everyone in the resturant is now staring at her. Finally she says, "I would like to order another shrimp taco."

Amazing that it takes going to another country to learn some personal responsibility for one's own actions...

My parents once had a tenant who painted his bedroom walls black (he didn't ask permission to do so, if I recall correctly ). I guess it went rather nicely with the knife holes on the wall opposite his bed. Seems he used to sit on his bed and throw his knife across the room into the wall.

But I don't think he was Italian.

Glad he moved out before I took ownership of the property. Just wish my folks hadn't left me with the trip-over-my-cat-fall-down-the-stairs-break-my-hip-and-sue-Karen's-ass tenant.
