First time Prom experience
My daughter is graduating in May this year, and next month is her Prom. I've read about prom, heard about it, and even seen 'stuff' on TV about Proms, but I honestly don't get what all the fuss is about. Yeah, I know they're graduating, but isn't that what graduation day is about? Then there will be the overnight 'lock-in' to celebrate after graduation in May.
I had graduation (back in the day), but we didn't have an extra day for 'Prom.' I'm cool with looking for a dress...wait, make that 'THE dress.' BUT, I won't be spending hundreds of dollars for a one-time dress, and daughter is content with that as long as it's not from SEARS Now I'm hearing something about a LIMO????? Huh? ![]() |

It is an important ritual, but lately I am seeing what I would consider to be WAY too much $$$$$ being thrown at the festivities.
You need to sit with your daughter and plan out a sensible budget, discussing what SHE has heard other kids will be doing, and what she is comfortable cutting back on, or simply must have, etc. Good experience for adult life. |

Okay, so I get up this morning thinking about the 'prom thing' and decided we need to set a budget. The explanation for the Limo was reasonable. The kids (all girls) are going to the prom together. There are 8 of them and they're splitting the cost of the limo...whew...that's a relief. I can live with that. Daughter is an honour student ALL 4 years of high school. That's an amazing accomplishment.
These girls are really confident young ladies who decided right off that they DID NOT need someone to escort them to the prom. I have to admit that I admire my daughter and her friends. They're a bit intimidating I think to some guys since they're not needy, very intelligent, and know what they want. Some of the mums say they're so 'together' compared with when they were that age. A good night's sleep got me to thinking how much she deserves a 'fun' night. And get this for 'experience' Angel, they're planning on either going to IHOP after the prom or bowling!! Reason? They have to pay for a 6 hour limit on that limo and want to use up as much time as possible![]() |

Set the budget or your daughter will expect you to keep up with the "Jones". Set it now and let reality set in. Explain to her that you want to be able to retire someday, otherwise you are going to move in with her when you retire.

hehe! Our house has lots of prom experience...err...ummm...not your kind A' !!! It does get quite $$$$$ if you let it. Not only is there the dress, but then you have shoes, up-dos ( at least $50 around here), manicures, pedicures, brow waxing, jewelry, pictures and a purse to match!!! The school here has dinner served at the prom location so at least they're not all heading to the most expensive rest. in town. We have already been dress shopping and the prom isn't until Memorail weekend. One good thing is that several schools around here have dress sales. People bring in their "slightly" used dresses and and the school organization gets a cut from this yard sale type event. There are $300- 500 dresses for $50-100. Good deals! (Although mine hasn't purchased here several of her friends have.) Here is last year's dress. She's in the blue with her soccer buddies. We don't do over nighters here so that's one less worry! ![]() |

Minnesota, you're lucky to have so much time to get stuff for the prom. Ours is VERY early, and I'm not sure why that is. However, yesterday we saw some 'prom' kids going out to dinner so theirs was even earlier! Yikes!!
Daughter is wonderful (just like her mother, hehe), and is very reasonable about her wishes. We'll do the dress, hair, purse and the limo. The school is organising dinner (tickets for the prom are $45) so that's not bad. She said manicure and pedicure are not necessary, and if her dress matches the new Steve Madden shoes that she wore to another dance last year, we won't have that expense. BTW, shoes were found at Ross of all places for $20. No joke, same shoe at Nordstrom was selling for $89. Unfortunately, dresses at Ross are tacky...sigh... But I'm feeling a lot better since we got down and made up a list of 'must haves' and some 'maybes' if we want to spend more. She's so excited that I wouldn't feel right messing up the big night for her. Did the big speech just now and she blushed and said 'thanks mom' . I told her she's been a wonderful daughter, made excellent grades, has an intact reputation, is well thought off by family and friends, and who could ask for a better kid? It was a Kodak moment ![]() |

Our daughter loved proms! She still has the six different gowns she wore to snow balls and proms (she won't let me get rid of them). The dress was always the biggest expense; they never got a limo and went out to restaurant only once or twice. Most of the time, dinner was at a friend's house.
Have fun with your daughter shopping for "the" dress! It's a special time in both of your lives ![]() |

Just 1 day? when I graded I had a $400 dress, $100 for shoes, $150 Hair and Make Up, Limo (cant' remember the costs it was split 10 ways) dinner $100, and then rather then just 1 day we had a 4 day party up at Whistler.....never been so drunk in my entire life. probably spent around $200 or $300 up there.
