Diving for uncertified divers?
I'll be staying at the Iberostar Tucan from 3/25 through 4/1. Have done a "resort dive" once in Cabo, water visibility was not good. Thought I might give it another go in Playa (I know, I should have done the class so I could do the certification dive in Playa. . .next time). Any suggestions/recommendations for diving without being certified?

Any PADI certified dive store in Playa should be able to take you diving, with an instructor, under Padi's resort diving. again, or discover scuba programs. Recomendations for a dive store, my favorite in Playa - Abyss. Though I'm biased, owner being - Canadian

You will go through some theory, then do some pool practice and finally you will go out in the ocean under (close) supervision of an instructor. You can do that at the resort (very convenient, obviously) with Dressel Divers. Since there's no reef right in front of Tucan, they will take you on a short boatride (10 mins. or so) to one of the nearby reefs. Visibility may vary, depending on weather conditions in previous days. Generally speaking I think visibility is great and, depending to which reef you will go, there's lots of flora and fauna to be seen. Since there's quite some competition in that area as far as diving is concerned I suspect that they're not overpriced and I didn't have a bad experience with them last year when I got certified myself. I will arrive on 03-28 myself and am going to extend my certification one step further at the Tank-Ha dive shop in Playa this time. I wanted a change of pace and compare. And Tank-Ha is often recommended. You will see some other dive operations recommended by this site if you have a look at the directory page (see directory tab at the top of this page) Last edited by james; 03-22-2006 at 10:29 AM.. |

Our last trip to Playa, last March, we did the one day Discover Dive course with Scuba Libre (they are located on a side street right up from the beach and off Fifth Ave in Playa). It was our first diving experience and they were very good to dive with. We did the training in the pool and small group in the AM,and two dives (about 45 feet) in the afternoon.
My SIL and BIL also dove over at Cozumel and in a cenote with Scuba Libre and said they were good.

diving in playa is wonderful. usually your first few dives dsd course will be shallow. naui, ssi, padi are dive associations that all have some type of dsd(discover scuba diving) i would encourage getting in touch with who ever you decide to dive with to make prearrangements.
visibility varies...........usually over 80 feet at its worst. deeper dives are clearer most of the time. the winds usually travel landward and make the seas a little rougher than when the wind travels seaward. not a big deal unless you get seasick, if so take bonine the night before and no worries. |

You will love diving in Playa! If you get a chance take a trip over to Cozumel! The diving is GREAT there too. Some ops will include a day in COZ. Like BigDave, I would also recommed Abyss. We didn't dive with them but I got a chance to talk to them and I liked their personality!
