Cancun Airport Crowds
Anyone who's been there in the last couple of weeks, how long has it been taking to get off the airplane, through customs and on your way? Is it true only one terminal is open? How early did you arrive at the airport for your return flight?

We arrived in Cancun Feb 25th on a Saturday afternoon. It MAYBE was a total of 25 minutes from the time we landed till we were boarding the bus for Playa. Everything went really smooth. They opened a new line for immigration just as we got there, our checked bag was already there waiting for us. We got the green light. Everything was a breeze. 2 weeks later when we left, again on a Saturday, we arrived a full 3 hours before the flight home, and used every minute of it. Something about the computers being down and they had to do all the tickets by hand? There were lines everywhere.

On our arrival 2/26 it was a little more crowded and there seemed to be baggage handling problems. Customs & immigration are very efficient and went smoothly.
We waited nearly an hour for our bags. Luckily our transport company was still waiting and we were off immediately. We usually try to get there the required 2 hrs early for check in on the way home. Could probably cut it closer but that allows me plenty of time for shopping the duty free and hitting the corona bar before boarding. Only the one terminal is open at present. Terminal 2 I believe. |

The airport arrival went smoothly in '05 and '06 despite the fact that this year our luggage didn't make the connecting flight and wasn't there when we landed. It arrived at our resort about 9pm which was a tad upsetting but we didn't dwell on it. (I will always pack all of our bathingsuits in my carry on from now on.)
You definately need 3 hours when you depart. It is a zoo!!! My advice is to tip your driver and ask him to help you find the correct line. Once you are in it, just relax and keep moving inch by inch, minute by minute. Some people get so irate but it is out of your control. Just get in the right line and take some snacks and water and you'll be all set. Chat with someone in line and exchange vacation stories, people watch, count the # of hammocks being taken home... I did see several people arrive at the airport and start yelling, "My flight leaves in 15 minutes..." Guess what, they missed their flight. Don't arrive late at the Cancun airport!!! |
