Allegro or Barcelo Maya
We booked the Allegro for a trip in 2 weeks, but are now concerned after reading some negative reviews on Trip Advisor. We can switch to the Barcelo Maya if we want. Has anyone been to both? Pros/Cons? HELP!

I dont think these resorts are really comparible. I would pick Barcelo.
I have stayed at Barcelo and seen and read a lot on the Allegro and Barcelo would blow it away If you want to stay in town I would my self check out the Iberostar Tucan. Barcelo is one heck of a resort check out the unofficial web site and discussion board. |

No, these two resorts really aren't comparable. The Allegro is 3-4 star, Barcelo is 5 star. The Barcelo has an awesome beach, the Allegro barely any beach. Big differences with dining options, food selection, pools, ground, etc.
Just not comparing apples to apples with these two properties. If you have the opportunity to switch at a price that is affordable for you, then personally, I would do it in a heatbeat! |

Just to make it clear, the "old" section is really not that old...and some people actually prefer the atmosphere to the new section........ I think you will love either section!! |

I too am trying to decide between the Barcelo and other resorts. I am hooked on the Barcelo, but the last post made me pause. If you stay at the older sections you do not have run of the resort? I need that clarified before I can get people in my group to sign on with this resort. They were planning to stay on the older side and that limitation to the whole resort would probably be a hitch in the plan.
Also, in the list of all inclusive, it states domestic only, what does that mean? No imported beer from other countries(a given), but what about the liquor? Scotch, gin, vodka, etc. Does that just mean rum and tequila drinks? Final question. Is the whole beach coral or is there places with just sand? Thanks in advance! |

Bottom line, if you pay more to stay in the newer sections of this resort, you get more. Not an unusual concept, the same goes for some of the Iberostar and Riu resorts as well. If you want full use of everything in all 4 sections of the hotel, you have to stay in the Tropical or Colonial sections. "Domestic only" means domestic brand liquors are included. This is all kinds of alcohol, not just tequila and rum. There are also many "name brands" that are included at no extra charge, but a few high end brands you may request would carry an additional charge. And finally, there is PLENTY of sandy beach at this resort. There is NOT coral ON the beach where people sit. There IS coral out in the ocean where people snorkel. There is also areas in the ocean where there is now coral and this area is for swimming. Not sure where you may have heard that the beach might be all coral, but there will be no problems finding a sandy beach here. |

You won't know exactly which one until you arrive however. |
