I vote condo!
Hi Mave-
Just in case you haven't made plans already....... We just returned from Playa Del Carmen, and we stayed at a 2 bedroom condo on the ocean, right near town. It was great! There was maid service every day (and the maid was wonderful - she made the towels into surprise "towel art" every day. There were towel swans in the bathroom, a towel flower on the bed on day, and even a towel rose in the spare toilet paper!)
The condo was well taken care of, and had a wonderful view. There was a pool (although no service) - actually two pools joined by a bridge. A man was there every day (where there would be a bar) selling ceramic plates, animals, etc. he painted, or you could paint them yourselves.
There was a refridgerator, a stove, microwave, coffee pot, etc. Plus they had a big bottle (5 gallon, or so) of bottled water they replaced all the time. Probably the best part (besides the view, and the closeness to town - 5 minute walk, if that), was the guestbooks. People have been writing advice, trip reports, etc. for years! I used them constantly to find restaraunts, tours, etc. Better than a guidebook!
Good luck, and let me know if you need any more information. The price was quite reasonable - I think it was somewhere around $1000 for 8 nights.
