Lioness and Crazy Pete Royal Porto Trip Report

I guess I should start my trip report here with Day 1 which is actually the day before we left for Playa (March 18th/06). Please keep in mind that I had to work on Friday the 17th and was up and at it by 5:30 a.m.
This is also the first time my hubby and I have been away without the kids since our honeymoon. Needless to say we were both very excited and couldn't possibly imagine what a week without any responsibilities lay ahead....

Our flight left at 6:20 a.m. from Toronto on Saturday morning and we were so pumped that we didn't get one wink of sleep. Grabbed our luggage after landing and headed for the bus. A little tip for those of you who haven't been to the airport yet....Just keep on walking.... look for the person with your tour operator sign (outside) and ask them which bus you need to get on! Do not make eye contact with the guys at the counter just before you are to get outside!!!! LOL. If you do you will find out why...He tried to tell us that we had 2 free excursions and so on and so on. Complete waste of time. I think if we had 2 free excursions included in our package we would have known about it.

We were still in our jeans so it was really nice to get on the air conditioned bus! By now we were still wide awake and ready to party! As the bus headed for Playa we had a nice man (Renaldo?) bring us (one right after the other) Corona's !!!! By the time we actually got to the Royal we had about 6 each and both had to go pee sooooo badly that my hubby debated on whether or not the 2 empty bottles I had in my hand would be big enough!LOL!!! It wasn't until we were getting off the bus that Renaldo the nice man who was bringing us the beers (knowing we had to go) forgot to mention there was a bathroom on the bus.... If you can believe it?????

Check-In was a total breeze and were greeted with champagne right in the lobby! I had the hiccups so I don't think the girl behind the counter was too impressed. LOL. We were given our bracelets and the keys to our room and were told it would be ready in 1 hour. No problemo!!! Left our bags with the bellboys and decided to go for a walk and check out the scene!

We were completely blown away by the beauty of it ALL!!! The pool area was packed, the music was playing and yes, we headed right for the bar.
Immediately ordered 2 Miami Vice cuz I just had to have one!!! (mmmm! how refreshing!) Walked around a bit more and by then our room was ready. Dropped the bags, threw on our swim suits and headed straight for the swing bar! We're here to party and that's what we're gonna do attitudes....LOL
So after having 6 beers on the bus, 2 glasses of champagne in the lobby, 4 miami vice's and no sleep, a shot of tequila? Hell, why not!!! Sat my butt down on a swing and down the hatch it went!!! WOOO HOOO!!!! I should add here that my vision was getting blurred and must have thought I was Wonder Woman on the swing because I swang so hard that my legs slipped and went right up on top of the bar..... OH, MY, GOD....
I actually made alot of friends at the hotel because of this believe it or not!!! LOL. After embarassing the crap out of myself I kinda dissappeared and went down to the beach (hubby in tow of course)
We met a very nice southern couple from the States. It was their last day there and were heading home in the morning. Where in the States they were from??? Gee if I could only remember! The breeze was so awesome and I was so bombed. I decided to plant myself on a lounger and pass out cold! Way to go Shannon!!! Make a spectacle out of yourself the first day!!! That way everyone at the hotel can point and laugh at you all week long....... No, that didn't happen but my hubby asked the nice man to help him get me up and on my feet!

As we were heading up the stairs to the pool area, security (apparently????) asked me what my room number was..... I replied (so they say) to him ZERO, ZERO, ZERO! and just kept on staggering all way to my lovely bed.

Woke up around 10 at night and asked hubby if he wanted to go for breakfast..LOL. Wow! what a pounding head and still p*ssed. Pete decided (and insisted) that we go to the buffet because we hadn't eaten a thing and needed some food in our bellies.

Geez, I hope I'm not boring you guys here but we did manage to get to the buffet (Spices) I filled up my plate, sat down and mow'd so bad that I looked like a pig in a troff...Things were still very blurry for me and after a few bites starting spinning. I got up from the table and headed for the door. (Right now I am laughing) My poor hubby was left at the table all alone with such a mess. (He says) my food was all over the table, I mean the whole perimeter of my plate (place mat and all) was completely covered with food. OH MY GOD AGAIN!!!! People were walking by and looking at my plate and then looking at my husband thinking... WHO THE HELL ATE THERE????
He had to ask the waiter to remove the mess because he couldn't even eat his meal looking at it...That's what you get hun for insisting that we go out in public! LMAO.

Anyways, that's how it went and that was our first day. Way to make an entrance EH? LOL. Everyone, I mean, everyone was very friendly and even though I was completely trashed, they were still very accommodating and made us feel like King's and Queen's.

My mother is here now and reading this looking at me with very wide eyes in disbelief...LOL (Did you really do that she asked?)

Stay tuned for more .....

Well, I guess I did forget to mention our room location as I was having sooo much fun our first day! HA! As a matter of fact, when we checked in we were given room 220. It was on the 2nd floor right outside of the courtyard where the statues stand in the water. I was kinda dissappointed about the location because we wanted to be closer to the ocean. So after we got to our room and before the swing bar fiasco I did go down to the front desk and ask for a better room, they told me to come back at 8 in the morning and they would see if they could move us (part of day 2)....I also forgot to mention that there were tables set up on the grass and a stage for the dancers that night. It was quite loud and I don't remember exactly what time it was? (I think before we went to spice or maybe after????? LOL) but I did sit on the balcony and watch the show for a few minutes. I recall it being pretty good but the stomping of their feet on the stage was loud and the so was the music....But, who cares???? It was something to see and I'm certainly not complaining. For those with small children it could have been an issue but I kinda enjoyed it, thinking that the entertainment wasn't so bad and wondered what other kind of stuff they had in store.....

p.s. toddler food fight.... YA! those are the words I was looking for!

Day 2

I guess I can start out by saying that Day 2 was absolutely perfect! I had set the alarm the night before for 6 a.m. (how on earth I managed to pull that one off I really don't know) I do remember saying to hubby that we had to get down there early (and I mean early) to reserve some shade. Pete is not a sun-bather and not because he is a white a$$, it's just because he's had alot of experience with hot and sunny destinations and is not into suffering from the hot burning, I'm on fire feeling..... so it was important to reserve, and besides, I wanted a nice spot for our first day on the beach. I headed down around 6:15 or so and noticed that many of the spots had already been taken. We were actually pretty lucky to get a couple of loungers underneath a tiki hut and I might add that it is very ridiculous but, if that's the way they play the game, then hey, set your alarm and get down there a.s.a.p. (take a couple of old magazines you've got kicken around and a towel or 2 to reserve and you'll be fine)
Because this was our actual first day....lol (the first being a write-off )
I was wide awake and ready for action! I knew that we had to be at the desk for 8 a.m. to check with reception for a new room and in the lobby at 9 for a (quick 20 min.) briefing with the Air-Transat rep. I do suggest by the way going to the briefing with your rep. It is not a time share gig and she/he will tell you quite a bit of info that you will find helpful (excursions and such).

All I wanted was a coffee....So I went down to the lobby and filled 2 teenie weenie little mugs and being a little hung-over tried to think of how i was gonna carry these little mugs up to our room without spilling??? Don't be afraid of the "yellow cream". It is actually carnation milk and it is what they use for cream. It is quite good and the coffee was fabulous....No lie....

A quick tip about the coffee....

because the mugs are so small, we decided to take the coffee pot from our room and fill it up. Grab 2 mugs, some sugar, and cream if you need. Take to your room and it will get you by until you go for breakie. Yes, there is a coffee maker in your room but totally not necessary. The coffee is good and we both enjoyed it immensely.

O.k. from what I remember we hung out in our room, sipped on our coffee, and headed down to spice for the buffet. (which opens at 7) Because this was our first AI trip we were both completey blown away. Like, how many different kinds of juice could you possibly want for breakfast??? The food was soooooooooooo good! And we also slipped the omelet guy a buck or 2 every morning cuz afterall, he is the one cooking it up! Plenty of choices and all of it delicious. The service was very prompt and we were delighted.

Headed to the front desk around 8 or so and asked them if they would have a better room for us. We were so lucky to hear that they had room 251 available (if we wanted it) she gave us the key and told us to go and have a look. We did, and it was much closer to ocean, the action, and couldn't have been happier. I might add that we had no water in our "other" room our first day so I was kinda miserable about it but they assured us our "new" room would be ready in about 1 hour. We waited until after our 9 o'clock briefing with Veronica (who was very nice and funny) and VOILA! our new room was ready.

After that we headed down to our spot on the beach, we lounged, digested and had a nice little chat. Ended up running into a nice couple from Sudbury (which is about a 7 hour drive from us) and asked me "how I was feeling today" LOL...Well, ended up spending the day with them and they were really cool (same page as us) kinda people. Had quite a few Miami Vice's together, some tortilla chips, guacamole, and salsa for a snack (thanks to Tommygurl, ordered from Pelicanos) decided that we'd all go for a walk down 5th that night after having a lazy day (p.s. don't be afraind to ask for a Miami Vice with floater!!!:p They will top it off with a splash of booze just to give it a kick) Or, do what we did and fill an empty water bottle with rum from your room and give it a kick yourself LOL....

Went back to the room, showered, got dressed and met in the lobby in 1 hour. Walked down 5th and again, were completely blown away by the sweet little town of Playa. Headed to Wal-Mart, checked it out and then headed back to the Royal for dinner at Maria Marie's.

Dinner was amazing.... Crazy Pete and I both had the shrimp and beef, she had the Chicken and hmmm? can't remember what he had? LOL It was very good, all of us were very happy and hubby had too many tequila's downtown. He went to pass out and the 3 of us sat outside of Spice on the patio for a couple more drinks after dinner and that was it....so we called it a night and hit the hay!!!

Lioness, Your trip report is just too funny! Both you and Tommygurl have provided some great info on the RPR with a humorous twist with your reviews. We are heading down there this Wed from chilly Edmonton and after being in Afghanistan for almost seven months, it will be a lovely place to kick back and relax. Looking forward to that swing bar too!!!

I could hear my children's little voices downstairs but just for a moment I pretended I was still in my room at the RPR! Have no worries tdub....you are going to love every minute of your holiday! Trust me!

Too funny! I had one of those first days on a recent trip to Cabo. The next morning hubby and I hit the pool and everyone we saw said hey Jami, how are you this morning? I just looked at Kevin and said who are these people and how the hell do they know my name?

Day 3 Part 1

Pete was up before me because he had gone to bed early the night before, he had already been down to the beach to reserve a tiki bed, and to the lobby for some coffee. I woke up around 6, we sat on the balcony, chatted, got dressed and headed down to Spice for the buffet. It was pretty much the same selection as the day before and just as excellent! I had a little bit of everything along with a delicious omelet and was completely stuffed! The orange juice is fresh squeezed so I had downed a couple of glasses of that along with 2 cups of coffee. (No wonder I was so full) Slid the waiter 2 bucks, went back to our room, changed, grabbed 2 pillows off of our bed and straight down to the beach! Within half an hour or so Pete was sleeping again and I was lubing myself up with some banana boat. I propped up my pillow, listened to the beautiful sound of the waves and enjoyed the beautiful breeze. It wasn't before long I saw a beach butler walking by with a tray in his hand so I called him over and ordered 2 Miami Vice. Wow! The bar is open already I thought??? Well then, if the bar is open then I might as well get started!!!! We had also reserved 2 loungers right next to us for the couple from Sudbury and it wasn't long before they came down to join us. I found the drinks very refreshing in the heat, but not enough rum. (some people can taste the booze...others can't) I was trying to remain low key anyways and to be honest was avoiding the swing bar....LOL. I must have had at least 10 Miami Vice on the beach that day and did request extra alcohol. The guys decided to go for lunch at Asiana restaurant. Us girls weren't really wanting to leave the beach so we gave them the green light and the 2 of us carried on with rum and cokes and an order of nacho chips with salsa and guacomole!! :p We decided to grab a boogie board and hit the surf! What a blast we had!!! The water was so warm, the waves were so high and one right after the other came crashing down on us!!! I think we were in the water for a good hour. She was a very tiny woman and kept on getting knocked down by the waves. We had such a laugh! She'd no sooner get up and another would come along and knock her down again! LOL We were both pretty pooped after this and wondered what the heck was taking the guys so long??? (they went for a walk) I headed back to my room, sat in my hammock on the balcony and had a nice little nap. There is quite a bit of action happening around the pool area and yes, it is loud (in a good way) They play really good music (great selection for all to enjoy) and there are all kinds of activities going on for everyone. I think they were playing bingo that day, but other days I remember them teaching a dance lesson and another having some sort of trivia??? I personally thought they could do without the guy on the microphone but I really wasn't listening to what he was saying so maybe that's why I found it a little annoying. No big deal though, when I had had enough I went in my room, closed the patio door and voila! no more noise.

I hope you guys are enjoying my report!!! It's getting late and it's back to work in the morning (darnit!) I'll have to finish up the rest tomorrow....
Stay tuned for Day 3 Part 2
