It's never bothered me. It's all bagged ice as far as I've seen.

Never have had any issues with the ice either in the resorts or downtown Playa. Almost anywhere you go uses bottled water or have their own filtration system.
Maybe the resorts filtration system was dirty?
Don't worry about it.

If the planeload was coming from a vacation in this area, they are most likely misinformed about how they got sick. Anywhere the average tourist is to visit in this area will serve ice cubes made from purified water.

Bars and restaurants don't have their own ice machines, they use bagged purifed water cubes. Have ice in your drink, unless you really like warm drinks.

"ICE" is one of the rare 3-letter searches you can perform on the forum.

ICE Search

Ice cream, Ice chests, Ice Machines, etc....

Another for "Purified"

Search - Purified

In 4 trips I've never had problems w/ ice, lettuce, tap H2O, or any of the limes that I've shoved into my Dos Equis that I have no clue if or how they were "sanitized", even off of 5th.
Now if you are in Coba, Valladolid, etc I might (emphasis on might) use caution.

I really got to try one of them three letter searches! I have done several four letter searches with great success.

You didn't specifically say in PDC so I agree that if you are out in the
'sticks' you might be careful about ice. My theory is that if you are in a questionable place, drink cold beer, out of the bottle...it's cold and you aren't using a glass or ice.

Whenever the question of getting sick in Mexico comes up, I'd like put out a little reminder that, contrary to popular belief, the biggest 'dangers' are not local restaurants or ice. It's more a question of a different bacterial flora than your stomach is used to (and just how sensitive your stomach is to it), an overindulgance in alcohol, the buffets at your AI sitting out in tropical heat, and most importantly your personal hand hygien. Wash your hands before eating and you'll avoid a lot of this issue.
