European Flooding

Shelby and I will be arriving in Europe on April 30th. I have specific concerns regarding the flooding in Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary.

I am interested in any first hand knowledge of the flooding in the following areas:

Germany; along the Rhine and Mosel rivers between Koln, Rothenburg and Frankfort.

The Czech Republic; Prague, Kunta Hora and Cesky Krumlov.

Hungary; Budapest.

<O:p</O:p
Austria; Vienna.

<O:p</O:p
I am looking for information on the flood conditions of the cities and areas listed above. If any of the European members has any specifics, it would be greatly appreciated.<O:p</O:p

Hey Tony,

no problems along Rhine and Mosel. We've had some more water in Cologne the past days but nothing major. Don't think they have problems in Austria either. You might have some floodings in Czech Republic but usually floodings are in restricted areas within the cities (if at all). And by April 30 this will all be gone anyway (if there is not another flood but I don't think so).

Regards
Andrea

Here in Germany most of the floodings were along the river Elbe- and concerning the southwestern parts of the country (also some up here in the north- but not that bad).
The tidal wave has passed though as far as I understand- so like Andi said: by the end of the month there will be nothing left of that unfortunate event.
As for the situation in Austria- maybe send Connie a pm....she will know what is going on there.

Tony, there have been no floodings in Vienna but in a region close to it (east of Vienna; mostly village of Dürnkrut (river "March")/district "Gänserndorf".) Have a look at the map to see where it's located. The situation is still bad there but I don't think you will encounter any difficulties in Vienna at the end of April. The waterlevel of the river Danube is now higher than usual but unless it starts raining real hard again this shouldn't make you worry about your trip to Vienna! Have fun!

Thank you.

Connie, as we rail from Budapest into Vienna we may be traveling through the affected region. I hope water levels are down in time.

I am also concerned about railing from Vienna into Prague as I hear the Southern region of the Czech Republic has been devistated. If you should hear of any changes to the cities mentioned above, please update. I will continue to check this thread until we leave.

Thanks again ladies.

Tony, I have colleagues who had to go to Prague last week and they were thinking about cancelling (one of them acutally did). But the colleague who told me this on a social event said too that she had talked to our clients in Prague and they had told her that there was no need to cancel as only small parts of the city were affected. So although the news might tell that some areas are devastated and this is certainly true, the areas affected usually are still relatively small. When we have floodings in Cologne the news are always on it like 'Cologne is flooded' but the area really affected is only a small percentage of the whole city. And after 3 days this is usually gone too...

So no need to panic.

Andrea

We are following through with our anticipated travel plans with the exception of one city. Cesky Krumlov in the Southern region of The Czech Republic. From what we can tell, this city has been damaged. We are disappointed, as we really wanted to see Cesky Krumlov on this trip, as we missed it last year as well.

Again, thanks to all you for your help. I will continue to monitor this thread until we leave. If you should hear of additional news, please post it. It would be very helpful.

Tony, just reading the news on the floodings. They have migrated to Romania and Bulgaria by now (so down the river Donau). In Hungaria they are still having problems too. So the major part of the flood has gone down the river and you should not have any problems at all....

Have a great trip and don't forget to write a report afterwards...

Andrea

Thanks Andrea, from what we can tell on our end, the flooding should have no impact upon our travels. It’s getting close and we are getting excited.
