I am 42, 5'6'. Lost 15 pounds over the winter so I am down to 135 which I haven't been since I was 20. I have been trying to tighten up my 40 year old stomach but I am determined to get into a two piece and I don't mean a tankini.
First I am spending a little time at the tanning salon, though
Wow, we're the same age, same height and basically the same weight. Diet first, then cardio to burn the fat, then strength training. Whether it's weight or resistance. That stomach will be flat in no time. I've learned to stay off the scale. I just go by the pinch test every couple of weeks to see where the body fat is.

Yeah, I did the diet first which is how I dropped the 15 lbs. Went down 2 sizes and definitately tightened up a great deal but just need a few last hints to try something new. Actually pulled my (bad) back out doing crunchesSunday night. I play and coach softball and last year sprained my ankle sliding into 3rd base the last game of the season. That stopped me from doing the heavier cardio (I love kick-boxing!) over the winter.

The whole idea of having to work to lose weight is so foreign to me. I have been a total skinny mini my whole life. I didn't crack 3 digits til college and I even dropped back to 2 digits when I was first married and having both of the boys. And I'm over 5'6". Not pretty.

BUT NOW... after gaining 41 pounds on a 115 frame and giving birth 4 weeks ago, things aren't melting away like they did in the past. It all stayed in the booty and the belly. I'm in a holding pattern for now as I still have to eat well plus some extra to keep up my milk supply and I can't do anything exercise-wise until I get the all clear from my doctor in 2 weeks.

OK. I have been on a fish and veggie diet for two weeks now. I quit drinking (except for a margarita this weekend ). I started running a mile every morning and weight lifting in the evenings. Here is my worry. I will not be in Playa until May 31, if I spend the next four weeks not drinking will I spend my whole vacation passed out because I can't hold my liquor anymore. If so, the hell with the diet I look fine.

I don;t know if it will help getting into a bikini - but My Virtual Model Swimsuit makeover is awesom! www.mvm.com
YOu put in your height, weight, answer some questions about bust, waist and thigh size (or proportions) and it gives you a virtual model. you can "try on" swimsuits of all styles - then hit the "makeover" button and it puts your model in the best style and fit for you!

I am 20 weeks. This is my second baby and I was doing the elliptical the day before my c-section last time. I started back to walking with the baby at about 5 weeks post-partum and moms and babes yoga at 7 weeks. Taekwondo didn't start up again until around 9 weeks I think last time. I am not planning on having a c-section this time so I hope that I will be able to get back even sooner this time.

I was lucky in that I only gained around 23 pounds in my last pregnancy and lost it quickly. I found that for me, breastfeeding really helped me to lose the weight quickly. Getting toned and back up to my former strength level was a little bit more work.

He doesn't really need one for the shorter race. They do make you faster though. If he thinks he wants one for the longer race let me know. I've got a brand new one (worn 3 times) I'll give him a real good deal on. It's a little too small for me.

No way!! I'm 42 as well March 20, 1964!!

Jamesblonde is right that your belly will diminish in no time, PROVIDED your following a strict diet AND exercise program. I was 185 lbs when I got out of college at 6'0 and my belly would hang over my belt. When I was 26 I was up to 195 lbs and around 18% BF. I had always been very athletic, playing three sports in High School and 2 in College (Go Zips!!), but ate shit food because I didn't know any better. Anyhow, at 26 I decided that I didn't want to end up like alot of people I see, gut hanging way to far over their belts, out of breath, tired all the time, etc. Since then I've read a ton, talked to experts out here in Colorado where we are blessed to have some awesome supplement companies like EAS and AST, and changed my mindset and started watching what I ate and working more seriously. In the last 16 years my weight has gone up to where I am now at 205 at 10% Bf. That puts me around 180 lbs of muscle where before I was around 160 before. Put another way, I've gained 20 lbs of muscle in 16 years, even though I've gained weight. My belly doesn't stick out over my belt, I have tons of energy (it drives my wife crazy) and I have a positive outlook on most everything in life. At my age it is hard to put on more muscle due to declining testosterone and I have no plans on going the Barry Bonds route.

My advice is to develop a plan, get motivated, and change your mindset if what you've done hasn't worked in the past. What's the saying "If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always got" DOH!!

Streckman,

Seriously, what is the optimum or most efficient excercise to get rid of one's belly? I actually do sit ups, but I got more back ache than the packs. And the lower abs still got that love handle that just won't go away.
I am not an avid gym goers....

I'll be 42 next Monday.
I have the mindset thing going. That happened when my size 12's were getting to tight back in October. Now I am pretty good with what I eat. Very small portions. It is the work out I am having trouble with. Too many injuries. I am getting bored with what I have been doing thus far. Treadmill, floor leg exercises, and scrunches (as I mentioned, just pulled my normally bad back out doing those the other night). I have a stairmaster and a home gym but don't get into that room very often but I think I may be opening that door soon!>
