I am not an avid gym goers....
I'm eagerly awaiting an answer on this. My husband has lost weight and has started to work out, lower abs are tough.
As for your back pain (if you have back problems or think you may have inherited the potential for back problems see a doctor first!) do back strengthening exercises and until you see results there try using an ab roller to do your crunches. It provides support.

I don't spend too much time worrying about how I look. My clothes are clean, I showered, and my wife likes me; is about as far as it gets.

See...that was my first post...(see page 2). But after looking at Streckman's avatar, and he "claim" that he is 42...it tickles my interest. Perhaps I can do something a bit better....

Allright...I admit it...
Being a guy of course I don't want to boost the other guy's ego....but...Man, 42 and you look like that??
I'm in denial...perhaps that's Streckman's picture when he was 30 or photoshop . See that's the probelm about the avatar. It's so small.
Streckman, I'm poking fun at you....I'm sure that there are other guys jealous at your avatar and won't even admit it.

Another almost 42 year old chiming in as well ( May 10, 1964) I did buy two bikinis today..........I hadn't worn one since my honeymoonbefore last year. After seeing all the different shapes and sizes around the pool, I said what the hell and embraced the idea!
I do cardio six days a week and a combo weight/Pilates class twice a week. We do own a Bowflex and use it occasionally. Am I completly toned after two kids...........nah, do I have cellulite?......yep!! I do pretan, try to lose my inhibitions and figure it ain't going to improve with time!!..............

To each his own. I just am not one to care too much. Although, it helps that I was born drop-dead handsome.
My weight remains steady. What changes is where it decides to hang out. Sometimes, it is in the belly, and other times it is in my ass. I can usually tell the seasons by where the extra 20 pounds are, at any given time.

Playa del sol,
Cute avatar. Is that you or your son?
My avatar got my son in it too.
Yeah....I think I'd choose the "mediocre body" route too. Too much effort to maintain.

I'll let him know...what size is it - not that I know anything about wetsuit sizes...but perhaps he will.

Is this a guy thing or what??? My husband is the exact same way...when he decides to train for something he is 110% - went from 195 to 180 in a few short months...he surely didn't have any fat on his body (okay, maybe a lil bit), but nothing to be concerned with - of course he looks great!! If I do say so myself... I want this - whatever it is - you men have!

good for you!! Can't wait to hear all about it.

I too worked out until Edie was born...actually taught 5 classes a week until New Years day...gave myself 3 weeks without working out - sure helped my labor and delivery go quickly. Went back to teaching at about 8 weeks, unfortunately I didn't last...didn't want to be away from the babe anymore than I had too and it turned out to be more trouble finding sitters than I had imagined it would.

Cardio is the only way I've found to really get rid of any extra...in the midsection...

It is my older son (just turned 4 yesterday). Being 45 myself, running after the 2 of them (the other is 2), keeps me somewhat active.

Great plan!! I too have a very nice home gym set up with Full rack, cardio maching, and Intell dumbells - the interchangeable ones - they rock!! I'll do cardio first thing in the am before I eat anything and then later in the afternoon or evening hit the weights. Throw in some high protein meals with lots of veggies and fruits. Problem is when my teenage daughter says "Dad, can we go to Dairy Queen tonight" , being the awesome Dad I am I can't say no!!
DQ is tough....my co-workers go and get Blizzards every other Wednesday...it is hard to resist!
I can't work out first thing in the AM...I am up at 6:30 and at work an hour later as it is....but I don't fully wake up until that thermos of coffee is gone, around 9.

No one 'miracle' exercise ...it's just fat and belly fat is stubborn fat, to boot ...just a combo of calorie burning exercise and less caloric daily intake, is all you can do.
Doing abdominal exercises will do nothing but tone the muscles underneath the belly flab, really- but unless you lose weight it will still be hidden.<!-- / message --><!-- sig --><!-- sig -->

well, I confess.. I turned 47 in December, and KNEW I had to get back in the exercise routine.
Joined the gym at the frist of the year and have lost 10 pounds, mostly runnng on the treadmill. I've always hated running but for some reason this feels good probably becasue it's working! I don't need to lose more weight but it's good for everything else. I feel so much better exercising.
I wore my bikini proudly in Mexico last month

Good for you!! that's what it's all about!

I have a girlfriend who claims she experiences "the runner's high" when she runs and thats what keeps her going back... I've been a runner most of my life and have never experienced that - still waiting , but I do experience some sort of rush when teaching classes...

That's it, you've been running all your life and probably do have the high but you don't know the difference!! You're just always high!

I still don't want to go run outside though, which irritates Perry. He's always been a runner and has always tried to get me to run with him, we're obviously not on the same level to run together...but he does like my new butt!!
