Playa's new mega shopping centre: Centro Maya

Centro Maya is being built almost opposite Sams Club.

It's rather large and is planned to have special buses carting tourists to and fro from the AI's up and down the area. I don't know if they're going into Playa Centro yet or not.

The opening time is yet to be confirmed but some shop owners are aiming for end of June completion. It will include a food hall, palm trees on the walkways and ample parking.

Here is a long, but not yet complete, list of the current 'contents' for your amazement and delight (expect some variation as time goes on):

Here's the big ones: city club, soriana, coppel, woolworth, MM cinemas, sanborns, office max, applebees

Then the rest, composing of varying sizes:

mixup, telcel, marti, play circus, bingo (ee, come and see the bingo wings!)

joyeria giovanna, segafredo, kids, mcdonalds, radio shack, intercom, yes, cocinas, sunglass island, samsonite, arito, lune blue, the house of teens, mayalab, nextel, andre bustan, body shop (just an island, not a grown up shop), lazaro morteo, paper max, melody, x2 banks, roxel, xcaret, dippin donuts, neo skin, telcel, zingara, wayan, zapateria, coqueta, repile, hallmark, opps jeans, urban land, moviestar, gnc, baby upscale, shasa, estetica blue, mundo animal, liz minelli (not in person), fullsand, caruso, cruise centre, sea of life, italian coffee, vicky form, hacienda santa lucia, hong fat, dominos pizza, teriyaki, taco inn, panda express, churchs chicken, puras gordas, stay cool, info net, bijoux...

It will be interesting to see how shopping patterns emerge, with the two new malls opening at very close to the same time . The other of course being west of 307 near the new fraccionamientos. I look forward to your updates on both Mindbender.
Thanks

Just what 307 needs...more traffic. I sure miss that one little stop sign the first time I went to Playa.

Strange how people complain about Playa growing in size .........yet everyone wants to stay in a hotel room...more tourists = more hotels = more workers = more houses and more shops .

Guess you are right on that one. However as long as it knows when to stop and not starts getting this Cancun feel about it I guess it is fine. I really like the way puerto escondido manages the thing.

We are lucky all the main expansion is on the other side of 307 ....Playa will never be like Cancun mainly īcos they are restricted to the South by Calica plus with all the caves etc they can only build three stories high .

See, all the tourists are upset and yet I'm totally excited. Amazing the differences in perspective.

I know what you mean and think in both ways My father is an economist and cant help it but seeing also the otherside of the perspectives. My mother is mexican and I saw photos of cancun from the 50's it is quite shocking.

We've been going to Playa for 5or 6 years now. We're a little bit aways yet but we plan to spend lengthy amounts of time in Playa and thats why we built a home there. We're quite excited about all the development by the highway because its by the highway. The beaches are still wonderful, the water is fantastic and now there will be even more services to the area. On one of our first trips, pre Chedraui, the food shopping was somewhat "colorful". Now you can with confidence from a number of places.

This tourist is also happy with most of the changes to Playa. If it's good for the locals and the town it's a good thing. I'll probably never go to Centro Maya anyway so the AIer's can have at it.

We have been going to Playa for about 15 years now and go at least once a year.We have watched it go from a village to what it is now and always dread it losing it's magic. But some things endure, and the people and the place remain magical . We've been chased out by hurricnes.I've been bitten by a dog, stung by jellyfish and I think gotten drunk... and can't wait to get back!!! Cos
