Trip Report: Guanajuato, San Miguel, Lake Chapala and Guadalajara
We have arrived home, after a long day of travel that started with a four hour bus ride from Guanajuato to the new Guadalajara bus station in Tonalá, followed by a 6 hour layover and a five hour flight to Portland, Oregon. This was absolutely one of the most (if not the most) amazing trips that Kathy and I have taken together.
I've uploaded the 350 or so photos that we took, and will start working on those tomorrow. Oughta have some up some time tomorrow Ron |

Here are a couple of photos, since I cannot seem to get off the road and out of the air enough to go to sleep yet
This one is of San Miguel de Allende's Centro - taken from a hill above

Thanks everyone.
I'll get to work on the report today, writes Ron confidently after a very few hours of sleep . I'm going to get the photos organized into trip segments and uploaded today, and will likely write a bit about the first couple of segments of the trip.It is good to be home. The cats are over their initial skittishnes, coffee is brewing, the rhodedendrons are blooming (probably some other smaller stuff I can't see in the early morning fog), and Kathy is sleeping soundly, so it feels a bit like slipping back into the routine. The plan for an expanded trip report is to treat it a bit like a chapter or two of a book and do a bit more writing and editing, involve Kathy as both a co-writer and a publication designer and have it done sometime by early summer and available as one or more .pdf files. In the meantime there will be less well-edited reports here and on our blog site - and there will be some duplication between those two places. Coffee is ready; I'll be back. |

A quick review, then onto the start of the report. We were invited to meet the rest of Kathy's family in Arizona at the ranch managed by brother-in-law and Kathy's sister. I agreed to go if we could go onto Mexico from there. We have been wanting to make a trip to some places we had not been, primarily for the purpose of scouting and exploring places where we might retire.
We came to the conclusion last summer that we would probably not live on the Caribbean or Gulf coast of the Yucatan peninsula, but would reserve that area as a favored vacation spot, planning to spend as many as a few months there during the winter. The primary drivers of that decision were the summer heat and the fact that it is hurricane country. That may mean we are weather wimps, but living in Portland for the past 5 1/2 years qualifies us as weather wimps in good standing We flew from Portland to Tucson on Saturday, April 15, via Southwest Airlines. A stop in Sacramento, where we saw evidence of the floods from the air; a change of planes in San Diego (where we paid $27 for two 6" cheese and tomato sauce pizzas along with two pints of beer; and we were picked up that evening by Kathy's two sisters. Here is the home of the sister of the Kathy ![]() Some ranch animals ![]() The horse barn, which also contained our two bedroom guest apartment ![]() Another ranch animal ![]() Flowering cactus ![]() I think this is a manzanita tree ![]() I know this is a swimming pool ![]() ![]() That is enough for now. Next post will be about Ajijic, retirement place of many US and Canadian citizens. Last edited by roni; 04-30-2006 at 12:32 PM.. |
