Deep Sea Fishing

We will be returning to the Playa del Carmen area in May. Has anyone gone deep sea fishing in the area? Would like to hear about your experiences with local guides and how your fishing trip turned out. My husband is a big fisherman but has never gone deep sea fishing. It is a dream of his to this and I want to surprise him with a trip while we are there. Thanks in advance for any tips or info!

We went deep sea fishing out of Puerto Aventuras (15 mins south of PDC)this past Dec. 15th. Though this was not in any way "high season" for billfish we had a great time. We booked the half day morning trip from 8:30 to 1:00 and caught two barracuda and two wahoo. One of the wahoo was about 60lbs. and took 20 mins. to land. If your man is a fisherman I would highly reccomend the surprise you have planned, especially as it should be a much more productive time of year for fishing.

You can book through this website (as I did) and Anna wil take care of all the details for you.

Late April is a great time of year to fish, as it is season for dorado (Mahi Mahi), marlin and sail fish. You can book your fishing trip right here on this site - just go to reservations and you'll get a list of boats to choose from and a booking form. Very easy!

We will be at PDC Easter 03. We have never rented a charter or gone deep sea fishing but are up for the challenge. I have a 10 year old son who wants to catch the big one. We will be chartering a 34' Crusader off this site. I have many questions and concerns.
How far do you motor out, can you still see land?
How deep is the water?
Are there big waves?
What are the chances of catching anything?
As you can tell by my questions I have watched Jaws too much. I am a worry wart and a bit nervous. Can you share any advice or info. with me. Thanks, Ann PS, Is there anyone else who would like to share the charter with us. In our group there will be 1 child and 2 adults.

Annrawa,
The wife and I will be down there over Easter as well. I will talk to her and see if she would like to share a charter. We(or at least I for sure) want to go out fishing while down there. Will let you know in the next few days.

Fishing here is very pleasant. We start baiting up as soon as we leave the marina, so there are no transportation hauls to get anywhere - you fish the whole time you're out. We stay pretty close to land - there's no need to go far since the natural channel between Cozumel and the mainland is a virtual fish highway.

In some places the ocean is deep, but you'll be on the surface the whole time.

Normally, the Caribbean Sea is kind and comfortable. If it's very windy and rough, the port captain may close the port and nobody goes out. In that case, you get a refund, of course.

Well, the sport is fishing, not catching. Nature has no guarantees. However, it's rare that a boat comes back empty handed. And April is a GREAT time of year to go deep sea fishing.

Make sure to save some of that Mahi Mahi for us!
