Vegas for Free (this is not spam....)

As a few of you are aware, I am about to take the long journey driving south to the balmy climates with the family and have our first family vacation in Vegas. We have decided that we'll probably go next week to avoid the heat of july, since we don't have any qualms about taking our kids out of school and don't mind listening to the squawking and watching the eye-rolling of their teachers when we tell them the kids'll be missing school for yet another vacation! Oh, the humanity!!

We are going on a budget (aren't we ALWAYS??!! *sigh*) and so as was suggested by Cuffed in another thread, thought a thread would be a good idea to start for suggestion of your favorite FREE or NEAR FREE or NOT SO NEAR BUT SO WORTH IT THAT YOU DON"T MIND IT BEING NOT SO NEAR FREE stuff to do and see and eat in Vegas!

All suggestions are greatly welcomed, I'd love to hear from all of you.

well, maybe I can provide you with your very own free Vegas tour guide. I'll see if I can get ahold of my girlfriend Christi, her husband doesn't let her work, the kids are outta the house and pumpin out grand babies (she's only 41 and on her second or 3rd) so she doesn't have much to do during the day. Very unique chick, I think you and John would like her (low income single mother background with a conservative edge ). At least you'd have a local to contact if you run into problems or need some info

Fremont Street Experience! Downtown is my favorite part of Vegas, but with kids you'll probably want the glitz of the Strip.

We were there for a soccer tourney last Thanksgiving. A great place to hike that's not too far from town (15 minutes - 40 from the strip) is called Oak Creek. It's due west out of town out Charleston. I found a photo that should help with finding where the place is. It was a wonderful place for a sunrise hike. I was out there before the sun came up and found it way cool for being so close to Vegas. The arrow points to the canyon where the trail leads. All free.

I agree with Heather, Freemont St. at night is a must for the light show. Just walking down the strip and looking at all the hotels inside and the lobbies could take a couple days in itself. The fountains at Bellagio are worth a see for sure.

My visit to Las Vegas went like this: we were on a road trip, pulled in to town at around 11pm, drove around for bit, amazed by the amount of electricity used in this city, got into a cheap casino, found a Black Jack table with a 2-dollar minimum hand (or was it 1 dollar?), put down 20 bucks, played all night, drank free drinks and got out of there with 20 dollars in my pocket. If you like to play Black Jack while hanging out with a friend, it was fun. Of course, at one point I was up a lot and could have walked out of there with a nice little profit, but hey, we had fun. And it was free, as it turned out.

And from there we went on to Death Valley. Don't remember how far it was, but that was very cool. Dried salt lakes, sand dunes and abandoned mining town (one had a house entirely built with bottles - the kids will love it).

We did the same when our kids were little and would pull them out to go on business trips and even as far as London for a week....middle of the semester to boot They're in honours classes and have a much better world view than their peers.

M&M Museum (free if you can keep from buying stuff), Coca-Cola Museum (same gig)...I like Fremont too. Not free but fun....the ride at the top of the Stratosphere. People watching is free in Vegas and you will never see so many diverse individuals in your life (read that to mean freaky, bizarre and sometimes scarey). I liked walking through all the different hotels and enjoying their themes...Paris, New York New York. The water show in front of the Bellagio is free and pretty cool. The Bellagio also has a seasonal floral display thingie they do (can't remember what it's officially called) but it's on the first floor and it's really beautiful. Don't know if the pirate ship show is still outside Treasure Island but it was neat. And I paid $5 to have my picture taken with some freaky dude on the Strip that was dressed as Elvis (one of the highlights of my trip).
You guys will have a blast!

Ginger,

It's easy, just hit every glitzy hotel and walk around.

New York New York - Cool place, do the rollercoaster ride.
Luxor - Walk around inside
Bellagio - Water show
Ceasars Palace - Forum shops
Treasure Island - Pirate show
Mirage - Volcano show outside
Venitian - The Canal Shops
Fremont Street - Nightly exibit

Across from Ceasars just down from the Venitian is an outside bar called the Carnaval Bar - Free Bands playing all day and night. Gets kinda crazy at night, after 11:00 pm or so, but fun to hand out, grab a drink and eat. This was our favorite "free" thing to do in the evening after the cheesy shows and all - however, the drinks were on the steep side. Buy the monorail pass if you plan on checking out the strip and don't want to drive or walk everywhere. Vegas to me is like Cancun without the water. One big cheesefest!! Have fun!!

I agree with Streckman's list... I think the roller coaster was a bit pricey--maybe 10 bucks apiece (times 5 of us at the time)... and I thought I'd heard that the Treasure Island show wasn't the male buccaneer show we saw 5 years ago, but something sexier with girl pirates--don't know where I read that or if it matters taht much... Water show, volcano and Fremont street are all pretty cool and very free....
