Got Chevy mechanical knowledge?

My 2001 Tracker needs to have new pinion bearings, carrier bearings, and pinion seal, according to the mechanic who lives here. He thinks I should have parts brought down from the states and he'll do all the repair work for me for $225.

He also suggests not driving on it too much til I get the work done but that it's probably okay to do minimal driving, preferably during cool times of day.

Any thoughts?

What would make him think you need differential rebuilding, what were issues leading to getting the vehicle checked out?

Had a wohwohwohwohwoh sound for a while now with the recent addition of a clunk in the middle of the wohwohs. Definitely got a problem.

He was a long-term mechanic at a dealership in the states for quite awhile before he moved here. His is the second suggestion that bearings are the issue, and it sounds like the best explanation to me, too. He even drew me a freakin' picture of it all!

Love the sounds . It does seem that you are not being led a stray . Good job on the second opinion.

OK, you've had more than one diagnosis leading to the differential. If indeed bearings are shot and you're getting various noises, I wouldn't drive at all. The ring and pinion could fail from all the movement/slop, which would probly cost close to $300US at least to replace, plus labor.
The bearings and seal, my price is $170Cdn, taxes in, yours would be $140US, then you have shipping from the US.
If you can find the parts under $200US down there go for it, but it's your call to wait for the parts from the US or spend the extra $$$ and get then quickly.
Either way, don't drive it. I have a feeling I'm underestimating the ring/pinion cost for your Tracker.

Sorry to hear that Susie...I had no idea what was wrong with it. If you need a mule of some sort...let me know.

I don't know, but it's usually in connection to a rack.

Sounds to me like your thingamajig just needs tightening and your doohickie needs lubed. You might also try to calibrate the whatchamacallit.

The pinion in question, is located at the front of the differential, which is connected to the driveshaft in Susie's Tracker. The pinion rotates clock-wise or counter clock-wise along with the driveshaft, depends on desired direction and which axle being used. The pinion gear is meshed with a ring gear inside the differential, and rotates the ring gear forward or reverse (depending on desired direction), which rotates the tires accordingly. Too much slop here, the teeth don't mesh properly and you have accelerated wear or breakage. More parts, more money!

The rack and pinion is a type of steering for many or most vehicles. I should do some pics, maybe, we'll see how drunk I get at lunch.

J/K!
