Radar, wow! ( and other palindromes... )
Yep, the police in the area are pulling people over for speed violations. I'm actually all for it. The radar guns are new toys, so the cops are still getting tricky with them. Watch out, and take your time.

Dammit, I'm mad! I guess I better not drive my racecar in PDC. Oh, that's right, I'll be in a Toyota or was that a Honda Civic.
Seriously, are they around PDC or is it on Hwy. 307, or both? Palindromes...gotta lov'em. Now one for you, ANNA. Bob: "Did Anna peep?" Anna: "Did Bob?" |

It seems as if their favorite spot is on the highway by Chedraui, as you approach Playa from the south. There's a section by the entrance to Playacar where the speed limit is 40 km/hr (about 25 mph)...
Thanks for the palindrom! |

Retired cop gives radar lesson to those potential victims of the Playa highway patrol… :P
Radar has its shortcomings of which, I am sure, the Playa cops have no idea! Beam Width is one. Think of a radar beam as a cone - narrow at the radar antenna and widening as it heads for the horizon. Even the narrowest of radar beams - 11 degrees - is 38 feet wide when 200 feet down the road and 57 feet wide at 300 feet away. Some radar units transmit a beam as wide as 24 degrees. By the time a radar beam is several hundred feet from a patrol car, the microwaves are blanketing an area as wide as a four-lane highway (and we all know there are more lanes on the 307!). Now picture that highway full of tourists, cars and trucks, and remember that traffic radar can't tell its operator which vehicle it is monitoring, or whether the target is approaching or traveling away from the police car. You quickly understand how great the potential is for misidentification. Now, depending on how good your Spanish is, just explain this to the next cop that stops you with that supercilious smirk pasted on his face and his new toy in his hand! I was caught in March! :-? Teehee! Manejar con cuidado! auntieninny XX |

Bringing this back up to the top reminded me of something I meant to post a month ago. The radar units are not only on Highway 307. One afternoon, the police were having a blast on 10 Ave. right in front of La Tortuga hotel. It was attracting a crowd of people watching form a short distance away. But that seemed to have no effect on the number of vehicles being stopped. The cars and motorcycles continued to fly by and the police continue to stop them.
Be Careful!! |

Yep, there are lots of cops along 307 in the Playa area looking for speeding cars. We noticed them as well but where not speeding. However, everyone else was driving like on the Autobahn through town. Between the formerly Mexico City Taxi Drivers and Expat Italians lots of speeding and rude driving habbits are going on in and around Playa. We had no real problems because I am used to European driving methods but I can see how some rental car drivers would get very nerveous. Just stay cool, have eyes like a hawk and don't let the taxi's riding on your a... get the better of you. Get over in the Emergency Lane on 307 where it becomes a 2 lane Highway if anyone wants to pass either you or is passing someone else in your lane, because they will pass if there is oncoming traffic or not.
