We just got back after a week there and noticed one of the ferries would occasionally park at that pier but not use it to unload any people. Only once or twice did people get off on that pier, and they were so shepherded by guides that we assumed they must have been from a cruise ship.

I was at the Royal in June and saw them building a platform for what I assume will be a ticket booth. There was NO issues at all with fumes, no smell and the ferries didn't stay put for very long at all. Don't really like that the pier is in use but I didn't find them to be a distraction or eyesore at all. Just look the other way - plenty of nice stuff to see!

They have installed stairs so beach walkers like us won't have to detour back across Constituents and walk on the hot bricks
I still don't like it and think its an eyesore There was an Ultramar ferry there and I believe they were taking cruise ship passengers on tours on the mainland

lol yeah I was like I sit here in front of the beach everyday and see the ferry crossing more and more.
The thing is for sure it is "prearranged" transportation of ferry passengers for their activities. They arrive to the dock and are moved from there to somewhere else. Without a doubt if that is going to be the concept here it is not of any value to our businesses in Playa del Carmen, just to them. |

I think that pier screwed up water circulation and sand deposition in the area between the two piers, real shame. Seems like during periods with less wave action and current that more junk is trapped in that area in the water near shore. Out a little ways the water is fine and clear but sometimes the first few feet along the shore is gross. Could be the propwash from the off shore cruise ships as well, or a combination I suppose, but it does seem to me like the water quality deteriorated after that pier went in.
