Question on Cuban Cigars

How much are they usually? Are they easy to bring back? Are there any certain kinds that are the best? I am going to Playa in June and wanted to bring some back.

As far as the price of cigars in general in PDC stores, I didn't find any deals. I was trying to buy some tiamos, mexican cigars, for a friend, and found that I could get them cheaper in the states. But to be fair, I only went into a couple of the cigar store on or near 5th ave. Perhaps you could get deals in a store more out of the way.

Try Casa Habanos (?) on the north end of 5th about Calle 30. they are the Cuban "outlet store" and Pardigas were running about $5 each, Cohibas were about $10.

Whenever someone mentions they want Cuban cigars when we're in Playa del Carmen, I always take them to the tobacco shop up near Cabalova Sports Bar on 5th Avenue just north of Calle-26. They're professional, have a good selection of Cubans, but certainly not the cheapest. If you're looking for knowledge about Cuban cigars, you'll get the straight scoop there.

As for bringing them back to the US, my friend got pulled aside in US Customs when he listed them on his declaration. They allowed him to remove the labels and then enter with them. I thought that was rather cool! Doubt that most custom agents would be that liberal. So I'm guessing you should remove the labels and stash them somewhere in your luggage. That seems to work most of the time. This Cuban ban is just plain ignorant!!

Hello Gsams. I was in Playa a couple of weeks ago with my banker, and he wanted some cuban ciagars. I took him to Wal Mart because I felt sure they would sell the real thing. He paid anywhere from 10 to 15 dollars per cigar. There is a lot to pick from. This guy had a friend in the states that's a cigar dealer, and this guy made him a list of what to ask for. That turned out to be a good idea based on the number of cigars to pick from.

There is a guy that sits in front of a cigar shop on 5th avenue hand rolling cigars. He has been there about ever time I can remember. I don't know what the quality is nor the price of his cigars, but they are freshly rolled. Has anyone tried one of these cigars?

The cigar store in WalMart is not part of WalMart. They sublet space. I have been in there a couple of times, and the cigars appear to be legit. However, I haven't bought any to smoke and make sure, as they are expensive. The only place where you can buy Cubans without worrying about if they are fake or not, is La Casa del Habanos (mentioned above).

If you want to make sure you're not buying fakes(and there's plenty of fake cuban cigars in Playa) go to the Casa del Habanos on the north end of 5th. Good selection and the prices were good. And they're an authorized seller so you can be sure you're getting the real deal. I used to tell people who wanted to bring cigars back home to hit the duty free shop in the Cancun airport but this Feb. the selection was almost nonexistant. Very disappointing. And remember if someone wants to sell you cuban cigars for cheap they're fake. Unless you're buying machine made cubans they're not going to be cheap.

As Kinky Friedman once said while lighting up a Cuban cigar "Don't look at it as helping their economy....look at it as helping to burn their crops." Paul
