Bitey Bugs
Can anyone identify this for me?
For the fourth time in 3 weeks (3 times THIS week and I was gone 12 days of those other 2!), I've been bitten/stung by some kind of insect. All of the bites have happened outside; I haven't seen the bug or felt it happen. This week, all 3 have been outside at my home, and the first time was outside at someone else's. I'm having a horrible reaction. It starts itching insanely, the entire area immediately begins to swell, heat up, and turn bright red, and, even though I am not frightened by it happening, I get that burst-of-adrenaline feeling throughout. People have told me it must be a tabano. As I understand it though, a tabano is the big black equivalent to a US horsefly. Those frequently come in my house, lumber around, make a lot of noise, keep their distance, and are easily seen, heard, and squashed. Whatever this is... it's small, quick, silent, and not very visible. A neighbor was visiting the other day and was annoyed by a small silver/gray fly-like thing, but I haven't seen those around me, though I guess it could be what's bugging me. So this time... it bit somewhere near the big toe; my entire foot is swollen and I'm feeling an achiness all the way up into my leg. Should I be concerned? I'm getting kinda fed up with this - can't live on Benadryl and don't wanna douse myself in bug spray daily. Any ideas? PS - None of these bites have happened in public areas... all in rather remote, rural, rustic, jungly places so I don't think it's a concern for the average tourist. |

Not sure how much help I am going to be.
When my children get bitten by mosquitos, they have a similar reaction to what you are discribing. It gets very hard and red, hot etc in the area and all around it. Last time was on his calf, and the entire calf was swollen, hot, bright red etc. This might sound stupid to some, but I put crushed charcoal on it to draw out whatever was in there as I wasn't sure what it was at first. I kept it on there with a large bandage. |

Sheesh Susie, that sucks. Reminds me of a story I read bout a fellow living at San Miguel. Got bit by a scorpio one night. Was too late and he was too tired to get dressed and go to the Cruz Roja, so he reported sitting on the side of his bed waiting for death. After about 45 minutes he got tired of waiting, so he went back to bed. He survived too. Stay urban for a while, maybe. |

I've no idea about the insect, but maybe you're emitting extra pheromones.

Susie, Iīve been seeing quite a few people with the same problem. Each has claimed to have been bitten by ants. Any chance of that. My friend Maggie was over a few nights ago and her foot was so swollen at the bite site, she couldnīt even wear a flip flop. Many people are allergic to them. Is this a possibility?
