I've seen a fair number of Minnesotans perusing the information boards in search of travel info for the Yucatan. It's amazing how much research people in our part of the country will do just to take a vacation or save a buck. After the investigation, many seem to opt for Las Vegas, Florida or a cruise (anywhere that isn't wintery)... because it's more economical!

My travel to the Cancun region started only 6-7 years ago... before that, I always island hopped in the Carribean. My original travels to Playa del Carmen were inspired by other travelers I'd met on the road... so I got to figure it out the old fashioned way. That's still my favorite way. I can remember my first time seeing the ocean in PDC as if it were yesterday... we were heading down Calle8 towards the water (near Yaxche). I kept thinking... it doesn't get any better that this!!!

So, why not count me in. My photo arsenal for PDC is fairly extensive (thanks to digital technology) and I'll no doubt increase that library in about a week.

Though I'm originally from Chicago, I'll begrudgingly call myself a Minnesotan after enduring twelve and a half winters here. I came to MN for college and left about 2 days after I graduated thinking I'd never live here again. About 8 months into "never again", I went to Mexico (Mazatlan, of all places) and met a chick from Minneapolis. I've been here ever since.

I''l be in Playa for the first time in exactly 28 days and I'm exicited as hell. I spent some time in Cancun and Isla Mujeres last year and heard plenty of good things about PDC. I feel like I know the town already thanks to many of the contributors to this forum. I can't wait to write up a trip report.

I'd have to think that Minnesotans value their winter vacations more than most. For me it's not only the cold, long winters here but the winter culture that surrounds you. I understand that snowmobiling and ice fishing must be fun to some but not me. "Making the best" of the snow and cold would just make me feel like winter is controlling my life and I won't have that. I had the privilege of spending every winter until age 14 living in Acapulco for three months and I don't think I've ever been able to shake that either.

Personally, my annual trip to Mexico is probably the highlight of my year and forums like this help extend a 10 vacation into a year round activity.

I could not have said it better myself , Ice fishing and snowmobiling are not my style, give me the sun ,beach and a cold drink . Although I live in North Dakota (Fargo across the river) not Minnesota we spend our summers in Detroit Lakes MN, and just love it . We were in Cancun last winter for the first time we normally go to Florida for a winter vacation but wanted to try Mexico. Now I am hooked and can't wait to go and see playa, I just found this site a couple of weeks ago and what a great find it has been we will be leaving from mpls in feb so well se you there.

Minny....Fargo.....and now Winnipeg, Canada. We are all neighbours! and we will be in Playa in hmmmmm lets see 35 days and can not wait.

Left Winnipeg a couple of years ago but am still in Canada (Calgary) and boy I know what you mean about the weather. Snowmobiling etc is not a novelty for us but more a way of life!!

James maybe this can help you understand why we are concerned about 'the weather in Playa' so much. We live weather.

Well Dennis and chupacabra, have a great time and don't trip over me on the beach!!

Thanks for the messages! We live in Golden Valley and heard about Playa 3 years ago. After the first trip, we have been hooked. We both travel alot and this is the first place that has been one that is planned out every year and won't be missed. It's amazing how many people from here know about Playa, just in general conversation it comes up and you get to share stories. We love the slow pace and perfect weather :P . I can't wait to get some trip reports, we won't be going until May

Go Minnesota and neighbors!

Hi everyone!
I live in Alexandria, MN and this will be my 3rd time to PDC...and I cannot wait to get on the beach! My parents have been going to PDC for quite awhile now and they have myself and my husband hooked now!
We didnt get to go last year because I had just had a baby, but she will be 14 months old when we go this year.
We are going Feb 11-15, anyone going to be there at this time?
I just love it there. It will be so nice to relax, it's been an awful week this week. My uncle died from cancer on Sunday and we had his wake tonight and my great grandma died tonight! What else can happen!!!!!! So a vacation is just what I need right now. I think this board is the only thing that is helping keep me sane

I'm in Minneapolis

I'm in Minneapolis. I've been lurking more than replying or posting lately, as I don't think I'll be in Playa this year, and it is breaking my heart too much to contribute fully. I'll start reading posts, and then simply click off the internet altogether, because I get that awful, slow, quiet burn in my belly...

I live in Richfield, MN. Man, it's cold here. I've been to Playa many times. Love it more each time. This year myself and some others will be in Playa Feb 21st through March 4th. We will be at the Alejari. My room this year has a balcony overlooking the beach. We will be bringing our guitars and jamming on the beach. We are all 50 something. Bring an instrument. Sing and jam with us.

Hey all . . .

you MN natives / transplants. Sherri from nord'east Mpls here. Formerly of Detroit Lakes (born & raised), college at MSU in Moorhead (still have a sister & her family in West Fargo . . . was just there for a visit last wk-end!) with stints in Grand Forks, ND, Hutchinson, MN and good ol' nord'east Mpls for the past eighteen years.
Amazing how many of us are eagerly awaiting our trips to the Yucatan!
I started going in '99 and was instantly hooked . . . had been to Matzatlan twice years ago and liked that, but found it didn't compare to the Riviera Maya.
I will look forward to the trip reports when all of you get back from your Feb/March vacations. You can expect one from me upon my return. Will be spending the first (2) days of our vacation at the Eclipse Hotel in Playa then heading down to a beach house on Solimon Bay for eight days. We normally rent the 2nd floor apartment in a villa in Playacar Phase 1 (great spot and reasonably priced right on the beach), but decided we were up for something new this time around. From what I understand we will not be disappointed. Solimon will be quiet for sure, but the snorkeling will be outstanding.
Any 'northerners' going during our trip . . . . March 26th through April 5th? Would be fun to get together to tip a few and swap stories.

Sherri

Eden Prairie, MN....I am wondering if Bev from Pequot Lakes has found this site yet...I have heard from some friends in CO that they are going to Playa this year instead of PV. We, unfortunately, cannot be in PDC this year....but I still get on this website and kind of go along with everyone else...keep writing your trip reports...those of us who can't go this year, really enjoy every one we read. Fortunately winter in Minnesota this year has been remarkably warm, and even with the colder temps we have very little snow on the ground....but it is still so sad for those of us who can't go this year. Have wonderful trips everyone.
