We like Popeye's too. Nice people, good food.

The beer battered fish and coconut shrimp are excellent.

While the chips are more french fries than proper GB chips they do have vinegar too which is an essential element.

Even one of the dips has a mild curry flavour too!

While you would know better, David, I found the fish good but not in the same league as a good London fish shop. (For some reason, the best fish shops we found in London we run by greeks...)

London has over 120 nationalities living in it and over 300 hundred languages spoken there. So it's not surprising! Also I think they sell traditional GB fast food as good business practice.

Harry Ramsden's is a famous fish and chip shop. They had a 1920's style restaurant in one town with chandeliers, tablecloths and waitresses in black and white 'maid' uniforms. Then in this faux opulance you'd tuck into fish n' chips with mushy peas, sliced white bread n' butter and a pint of beer! You could even order a bottle of champers too!

Never been to Harry Ramsdens... No fish shop I've EVER been to in London could be described as opulant, faux or not!

I had two I liked, one was on queensway, a few hundred yards up from hyde park. The other was near the scala house apartments, near the goodge street tube stop. Both owned by greeks. In such an international city... Go figure!

Kelli and I were just talking about how we need to take the kids to London as soon as Adrienne is old enough to "get it."

I have to agree. It's been ten years since I've been to London, but that was some amazing fish 'n chips. And the owners were Greek back then too! Funny how things don't change.

Popeye's (the one time I ate there) was good and I'm glad to have it as an option here, but I didn't get all that excited about it. However, I have yet to try the coconut shrimp. Playa Maya has an awesome coconut shrimp but I can't afford to eat theirs very often.

Deseo

Just saw on another forum that the restaurant at Deseo has closed (probably months ago, I didn't check the dates). Have they opened a new one yet. There were some masks in there that I would love to hang on my 'Playa Wall' here at home.
Love Mosquito Blue, been going there for 9 years now.

The restaurant at the bottom of Deseo which used to be called Fly? Fly closed a while ago and i heard the Glass Bar was taking the space and expanding to that side of the street as well. The Fly had a great picture of an elephant and a boy on the wall, I want to bid on that for my house

I know this was mentioned very early on this thread regarding soccer games and so but I just wanted to report that Zenon is open and doing good at the George and Dragon soon to be listed at the Playa Info directory, the business owners of the plaza where he is, organized a fashion show and I ran into Judy blue eyes and family there, he is going to have fish and chips and shepherd´s pie and all those good things! Im looking forward to that!

Judy Blue Eyes and her family

Before the fashion show they had dancers

Zenon was so unhappy!

Well geez, really took the wind out of my sails, Claudia. Thanks a lot!

Thing is, see, I also thought we could use some pics on this thread, but silly me, I just took pics of some of the new openings/closings that had been mentioned and some others that have appeared. So this is going to look awfully dry by comparison... Guess you'll have to focus on the craptacular photo quality!

Here we go, then, with captions below each image:

Impressively large condo (?) project going in between 10th and 20th aves and 26th and 30th streets, adjacent to the sport complex

visitor's office of same

building at corner of 5th and 20th (? -- diagonally across from Don Diego's), with SUnglass Island already in evidence (for this sunglasses-starved community )

The facade of the building that replaced the old swing bar on the corner of one of the 14ths and 5th practically screams "Oh, rentme rentme rentme!" to passers-by, but surprisingly no takers (that I have heard of) yet...

This is where the gallery that used to be on 5th with the interesting, large scale paintings is now: just shoot straight off Calle Corazón and you'll see it, across from Hot

progress to date on the building across 5th from Básico, at the corner of 10th street, which certainly does look like it will be shops (at least on the ground floor)

Call it "Still Life with Taxi" if you like, but that's the progress so far on the Burger King at the corner of 8th and 5th Ave, diagonally across from La Parilla

And it seems like now such report would be complete without news of this little locale next to Alhambra on 8th street (former location of Sol Food and many others), which once again is being turned over...

Sorry, no chick pics.

Steve

Ah what the heck?!? When in Rome...

I kind of like this one, which I hadn't seen before. Nice eyes, in this shot, and a little bit of a Mona Lisa thing going there with that smile, too:

And anyway, it's a lot less alarming -- downright skeery, I'd say -- than this one!

Just so as ya know I can also post chick pics if I wanna... :p

Steve

I like the second pic, but then that's four years at art college for you.

The only openings and closings I've noted today are my mouth and bowels, but I guess that's not helping much.
