Just so as ya know I can also post chick pics if I wanna... :p

I wondered what that was going to turn into. I watched them working on it while I was getting ready for my Spa Itza experience in mid-July. This picture makes me hungry and want a massage.

Well then I may be johnny on the spot, here, as I finally managed to walk by there with my camera during the evening when they were open. Of course that posed a new challenge to my camera -- getting a decent photo in low light -- but for what it's worth, here you go:

That's the owner there, front and center. Definitely worth a visit, imo, for the food and to meet him. (So is that they guy you talked to when you were sick, Heather?)

I can also report that there's a new French restaurant going in next to Alhambra on 8th, where Nu Game and prior that that, Sol Food, were located. It's to be called La Palate (excuse the spelling -- must be French for "palate") and they project opening mid-September.

For a very different twist of the palate, here's a shot of the progress on the BK on 5th:

Off the subject of food, it turns out that new condos are going in sort of behind Yaxche. You can see the narrow entrance with point of sale wedged in between the restaurants in this shot:

Those on site at El Faro yesterday morning when I stopped by also confirmed that a sale had taken place and that they would soon start tearing down what has been there in order to put up condos.

Finally, perhaps I should just add, in case anyone is worried about this, that the beach around here still looks fine.

Thanks for the spectacular photos Steve. Wow, I need to get back soon or I'm not going to recognize the place.

Thanks, Steve! I was in dire need of a direct Playa fix tonight and a shot of your beach always does the trick!

Little update on a few things for you...

According to Novedades de Quintana Roo (in an issue now about 4 days old), in an article about new carry-on restrictions and in direct reference to Cancún airport (without citing any source/authority explicitly), electronic items such as cellular phones, digital camera, laptops and iPods are among those items (including of course liquids) now prohibited. The only exceptions they mentioned were with respect to liquids and involved milk/formula for infants and medications with prescription showing name matching that of the passenger. Seems dubious, and yet there is now at least one mention of such a restriction on electronics in place by the press, for what that's worth.

The same issue of that paper carried an article stating that Xcaret management has announced that the park will garner ISO 14000 in the coming months, which standards Wikipedia (as you can see at that link) states

Quote:
exist to help organizations (a) minimize how their operations (processes, etc.) negatively affect the environment (i.e. cause adverse changes to air, water, or land); (b) comply with applicable laws, regulations, and other environmentally oriented requirements, and (c) continually improve in the above.
Even closer to home, on my walk down 8th street this morning, I was just passing the entrance to Mosquito Beach when I heard jackhammering that at first I thought must be coming from inside that property. However I later discovered that it was really coming from the roof of the now former El Faro hotel. I think at long last we have indisputable confirmation that El Faro as such is no more. I even saw cranes in the distance when arriving at the beach, though I later discovered that these were really at the Corto Maltes space, also being turned into condominiums.

I took this shot on the walk back, showing the contrast where Mosquito Beach and El Faro meet:

I couldn't get a shot of the jackhammerers, however, so I thought it was probably time for a little trek up to the roof, where I got this.

And now don't laugh -- I'm about the last person you want to have working on your family album in Photoshop -- but here's my attempt at a zoom to show that better:

Think that about covers it for now. Burger King construction is coming along, too, but that's not really worth a photo.
