Burger King.
too bad. Even a Senor Frogs would be better than BK.
That is too bad about Los Alamendros...we really liked it, went about three times our first trip to Playa, in 2001....then last March we went once and yeah, the service seemed lackluster; there must be some story there for sure.

Sol Food that was once on 8th (as you mentioned) then moved up to new 5th 100m past the head fountain. However they've sold that too now. It was another quiet location, set too far back and blocked by a coffee booth, and they didn't promote...

The new Mexican owners appear to be keeping the name and menu and are advertising.

Ideal Pasta on 5th is up for sale in a prime location next to Media Luna (co-incidentally originally owned by the people who owned Sol food - they moved to have a calmer business and, er, got more or rather less than expected. Reputations for good food don't carry far off the main drag when you have fresh clientelle to convince every week.

We heard the old TGI site was asking a very high rental price even just for the outdoor space. It would take a chain like Burger King to afford it - shame.

There are several restaurants up for sale at the moment. The end of the high season is a good time to go and cut your losses or keep your gains.

Yes I have seen them in that new location you mention, too, that's right.

Well it did sit for an awful long time. I did a search and for what it's worth, it was over a year ago -- April 13th, to be exact -- that I first mentioned the possible arrival of BK in this post, after Delmy had talked to workers there taking down the TGIF sign and asked them and got that for an answer as to what was coming. (I may not have been the first to mention it, either.) And it seems to me that TGIF had been closed for a month or two when that took place, too.

I walked all over town yesterday and realized that each time I walk around I see things that I haven't seen before. Kinda a nice thought until I realized it is probably b/c so many things open and close so often!
Isn't Fly the property where Jaime and Marshall used to live? It was a white house with an iron fence/gate.

Oh and Chico Latinos who have a cafe in Chedraui's have opened another one upstairs in Plaza Pelicanos on 10th (where the cinema is). Not many tourists venture up there but it's proving popular with old regulars from Chedraui and local office workers.

Yes, you're right. Those were the days (many stories from that house - the obvious after-hours party house). A small concrete house with a garden. A similar house was on the corner of 10th Street and 5th Avenue, where Hotel Basico is now.

I'll bite.

A KFC would be more than welcome, as now, we have to drive to Cancun in order to satisfy that urge.

Seems like Taberna, the sports bar on 10th at the corner of 4th street, is also closed now, or perhaps operating only as an Internet café or something. (I go by so early that it's hard to tell.) Anyone know about that?

la Taberna was open as per normal last night .

Well, I don't like the idea of these restaurants being right on 5th, but I do like the idea of them being in Playa. I could do without them, but it will make my husband happy, as he prefers that type of food over the Mexican variety. Something for everyone, I guess?

Thanks, Anna, I knew it was one of those corners - Renee and I were invited there to party during Hurricane Miitch. It was a special feeling to be a "tourist" and invited over for dinner - or the dreaded after hours party.

Take him to have the arrachera beef at HK de Monterrey on 1st street. It's hard to face a 'chainstore' burger again with its grey cardboard beef.

Ok, I'll bite. You have a Mexican wife. It's probably a little easier for you to make Mexican friends than it is for some others (?). I do lament the fact that I don't have more Mexican friends, but I have found it a somewhat daunting experience. I certainly won't turn down a friend just because they happen to be gringos like me.
