Where's that from? I think that's just wrong.

I agree, I mean not just from my view but from what seems to be the observed usage of the word here. I'm just not sure about Canadians. I think Americans are the best example but that a fair number of Mexicans would use the term to apply to Canadians, as well, either just out of carelessness or because they don't see a difference significant enough to prohibit the application of the term to Canadians.

I've just requested a poll of our employees to see what they say on the matter.

Steve

This is probably worthy of a different thread, and undoubtedly has come up on many threads in the past, but for what it's worth, here's what my wife and staff (all Mexican) say:

not gringos
Canadians
Europeans
Michael Jordan
Arnold Schwarzeneggar
U.S.-born/raised Latinos
Navajos
Asian-Americans
my son (who takes after Delmy in appearance/coloring)

gringos
me
my daughter (who takes after my side in appearance/coloring), but only if you don't know she's also Mexican by birth
the lion's share of our guests here

They're not sure what to do with my daughter once you know she is Mexican by birth, some saying that you can no longer call her gringa while others saying that you can because of her coloring.

Anyway, obviously there's a lot more going on than citizenship in a particular country.

From Funk & Wagnall - gringo : a foreigner, esp. one from any country where English is the official language. This would include most of Canada eh?

I think "Gringo" can also be used with endearment like "Gordita", for example. My housekeeper (who loves me, by the way) named her Cocker Spaniel "Gringa" because her ears look like my ponytail. She meant it as a tongue in cheek compliment.

When we ruled the waves we were the only ones with enough sense to eat limes / citrus fruits ................. everyone else was riddled with scurvy .

We did have a discussion about the etymology of the word gringo a few years ago... here.
