Pay pal question

What's the deal with getting verified? Not sure I want them to have my bank acct number. Anyone have any experience with this?

I am not a big PayPal fan... I have used them for specific transactions with success on Playa.Info, but I will not register with them...they have too much "spoofing" going on where I get email that looks like it is from them and it is not....they do not reply to my specific complaints about this "spoofing".....I recommend dealing with correspondence that looks like them very carefully. Watch for the little "secure" icon when dealing with them in the right hand corner of Internet Explorer.

I've been verified for a couple years now. Paypal simply posts a deposit (usually $1) into your account and then withdraws it. Becoming verified gives you higher Paypal limits and is required for certain types of transactions. It basically tells others who are purchasing from you or selling to you that you are legitimate and safe to do business with because you have a bank account.

I figured that a credit card would be enough? I'm funny about giving out too much info on my financials.

Ebay also has a lot of spoofing or phishing emails. Any legitimate communication from eBay will also be sent to your inbox in your eBay account so it's easy to verify. Even so, most emails are pretty easy to check... first look at the full email headers and then check any links in the email... typically, you'll notice that spoof or phishing emails and/or links do not have ebay or paypal addresses associated with them... many times they are from another country which is easy to spot. I never respond to email correspondence or click on links from any financial or credit source... instead I logon to my account using the company's login screen. If the correspondence is legit, you'll be able to access that same info within your account on the financial/credit institution's web site.

Oh and I always report any spoof/phishing emails that I receive and always receive an automated reply. However, I wouldn't expect to receive nor want to receive anything more than that.

I have reported same directly to PayPal with no reply whatsoever....bad customer service IMHO. Perhaps I was just a fluke lost in the shuffle? It happens.

A credit card is enough to open a basic free account without the need to become verified.

they cannot control that they are spoofed and you should understand how to avoid spoofing if you are going to buy online. avoiding spoofing is Simple with a capital S.

PayPal doesn't require any more info than any other payment gateway. They've been super easy to deal with for us. Better and better all the time.

I agree....the warning is still valid....I use them regularly for Playa.Info transactions....the registration thing for me is just a principle thing.

I have been verified (2 different bank accounts) for several years. I have never had any problems with them, or my account with them. I do get phishing/spam emails, and I immediately forward them to the paypal spook email address. I have always received a reply, sometimes within an hour of forwarding it.

Been verified w/Paypal for about 4 yrs. Never had a problem. Not that I sell much artwork via online (more of a place to refer those interested in viewing~but ya never know) Works great for those "foreign" sales though not all.
"Spoof" yeah it's all part of the online purchase but Paypal will ONLY address you by name-the others do not!

I, too have been verified with PayPal for about 3 years.
I buy and sell stuff on EBay and have never had a problem.
They have refunded me money when I never received an item (after an investigation, of course) that was paid for via PayPal. They have also removed sellers from EBay for that reason.
When I first complained, I received an automated reply and thought, Oh Great, but you do get an answer within a few weeks.
I would not fear becoming verified.
I also think you are protected by your bank after the first $50 lost due to fraud.
I know I am with mine.

I also have a PayPal debit card that provides a small cash back bonus on credit purchases. Additionally, I make use of their money market fund... so any money sitting in my PayPal account earns interest. I use my PayPal account to pay certain business related charges online and they have called on several occasions to verify that the charges were made by me before releasing the funds to the payee... which is above and beyond what most credit card companies will do.
