Google Earth Aerial view of Playa
Our city/town is a weird one when it comes to Google Earth and Google Maps; the rest of the Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley is in high resolution aerial photos, but there are only lower resolution satellite photos for Abbotsford. So when I learned this morning that Google had done a massive update yesterday, I checked... and I can see my home!!!
But surely it couldn't include my home away from home, could it???? Yes!!!!!!! PDC is now in high resolution aerial photos in Google Earth (a free download at earth.google.com). Google Maps is usually about 2 days behind, so look for it there soon too. Go check it out! Perhaps I have a summer project now... I could maybe try to create the first mash-up for Playa... Flash (Hopefully this won't be considered to be in the wrong forum... if so, please move it.) |

Ok... on second look, Playa's resolution isn't as good as most cities; but it's enough that I can see Steve, Toni and Cheri sending it to customers via email as a "how to get to my hotel", and Mapchick's Percy getting out the ruler to verify their great maps...
Who all has suggestions for projects??? I'm already thinking that I can attempt to put together a file that marks the location of all the peeps' favorite hotels, eateries, bars, etc.; but I would need a lot of help from you peeps for locating things. Perhaps I can even talk to James about setting up something that will make it easy to tag a location you are talking about in these forums.... Thanks for the coordinates. I'm pretty sure I must have walked past it a few times without seeing it on our last trip. |

If you take a careful look at places like the Porto Real, you'll see that this arial vew is still kind of old. You can clearly see that the new portion of the Porto Real is still in the middle of construction in that view. Also look along the beach past the Porto Real and you'll notice that large portions of land appear undeveloped which is clearly no longer the case.
PDC must not be on the NSA high priority sattelite list. |

This afternoon I was able to explore places as obscure as Tzalcala (so obscure that Google search is going to return nothing) and look inside abandoned houses around a long lost village square. I’ve even been able to pick out a couple of unknown (to me) cenotes that may be worth a closer look. Quote:

Anybody have any idea about the timeframe that this aerial view would be from
. Looking at the "jungle" that still appears in the photo between First Avenue and Calle 28 towards Mamitas, I would venture to say that the photo is at least a year old. Any other opinions or guesses? |
