Akumal

We would like to visit Akumal for a day, or even just a few hours. I have heard horror stories about renting a car in Mexico. So would it be to our advantage to take the bus or is car rental ok.

We stay in Playa del Carmen and take the collectivo down to Akumal. It's about a 10 minute walk from the highway dropoff to Akumal; not too bad at all.

On the way back, we either get a collectivo or take a cab.

We never bother with a car.

You could, but not sure if I remember seeing any, and the walk wasn't long, max 10 minutes .. suppose it depends on if you have young ones.

easy walk from the highway to Akumal Bay. Grab a cab at the Super Chomak convience store if you want to spend some time at HalfMoon Bay or Yal-ku lagoon

Usually. If you turn away from the highway, you will see a small village. Usually there is a taxi there that you can wave down.

We have always rented while in PDC. We have driven all over including a hair raising ride down the road to Punta Allen. The biggest problem we ever had with a rental was last year when my goofball brother parked illegally and got a ticket ... but they also take your license plate until you go pay the ticket. Other than that, we have never had a problem of any kind. I do recommend getting the insurance as it can save you quite a bit of hassle if you have an accident.

Thanks, I don't know what we will do, I suppose it depends on how far Akumal is from Playa. See ya on the 20th at the TB.

I agree with the above. Take a cab or collectivo. If you take a cab have them take you all the way to the lagoon and then make your way back up to Half Moon and Akumal Bay. We took a cab from Playa and got dropped off at Akumal Bay then walked to Yal-Ku. Do not do this...it is hot and about a 25 minute walk. The cab ride from Playa to Akumal is about 20-25 minutes and 22 USD. If you don't have gear then have the cab driver stop in Akumal and rent it, and then take it with you to the other places and then return it when you leave.

We always rent a car- let's you go anywhere and pointers are relatively cheap- we use easyway/econocar in cancun- they pick us up and drop us off- never had a problem in many trips. Have had to pay off cops twice though- once for speeding (200 pesos) and another time when a tope snuck up on me (50 pesos). Just don't get in a wreck- I'm actually very careful in any traffic at all.

Collectivo is easy, especially this time of year. When we have gone to Akumal from PDC via collectivo there has been taxi's at the drop off to take us to Yalku lagoon.

My perfect day to Akumal is collectivo to Akumal, arrive by 9:00 AM, taxi to Yalku, spend the morning at Yalku. Then walk to La Bueno Vida restaurant for a snack and beverage (15 minute walk looking at beautiful real estate) Then another 10 minute walk to Akumal Bay public beach spend the afternoon snorkeling and eat at the beach restaurant at Akumal Caribe. They have fresh water showers to clean yourself by the rest rooms which are free if you use the restaurant, a few pesos if you don't. Then take a 7-8 minute walk to the hwy to catch the Collectivo back to PDC.

That sounds perfect, It has been suggested to me to eat at the Bueno Vida. Don't know about the walking if it is really hot, we will play it by ear . Great info, thanks

That is pretty much our perfect day too! Except we snorkel Akumal bay at the main beach in the AM and eat lunch and have drinks at the Lol Ha, then go to snorkel Half Moon Bay in the afternoon and eat and early supper at La Buena Vida. They have (had?) a pool at La Buena Vida customers can use to rinse off too.

We have also never bothered renting a car there, the traffic scares me, and we find it more interesting taking colectivos and cabs.
