Mobile phone question.

We are off to Playa in four weeks. I want to keep in touch with my family in the UK but don't want to pay the high prices using my Orange mobile. Last year in thailand, I took my spare phone and bought a Thai sim card which allowed me to make calls back to the UK at a very reasonable price. Can I do this in Mexico and if so, what card should I buy?

Have you considered keeping in touch with family via email?
Also, I took my cell phone, but there are so many places on 5th Ave, to make calls at a much cheaper rate and you don't have that huge bill waiting for you at home when you get there. It was 1/2 the price of the cell phone calls.
