Does anyone work from home?

I am looking to work from home now that the price of gas is so high, but my company does not offer that benefit.
Do any of you peeps work from home and if so, what do you do and how did you get started?
I have no degree, so I am limited as to what I can do.
I did a search and came up with no thread with "work at home" or "work from home" as a title.
All help is welcome and appreciated.

I work from home doing computer work. I am able to connect to my work computer from home and login to other computers from there. So I can fix software issues from home. I also do webdesign from home. The lawfirm I work for allows me to do many things from home, but I do go into the office as well.

I know a few people who do medical transcription from home. That requires a degree or training. They also had a hard time until they found a doctor to work for.

I work from home. I just posted about it in the "what do you do for a living" thread, so I'll quote myself from there:

I work from home, which can be good and bad. When work is normal, load-wise, it is good becuase I can work around the kids and still spend time with them stress free. When work load is high and busy however, it can be bad because it is stressful...I still have to manage everything else, and John has to dig in to take up some slack. Often my day during busy times goes like this:

5am: wake up, go to gym, lift weights and swim
8am: return from gym, showered. Make lunches.
9am: get kids off to school
9am-11am: household duties
11am-2pm: work
2pm-3pm: household duties, doctors, shopping, errands, etc.
3pm: pickup kdis
3:30: take kids to dance
5: take kid to football training and go home to prepare dinner
630: pick up a child
7: pick another up from dance, home for dinner
8: homework, clean up after dinner
9: bedtime, talk to kids about the day and other things
9:30 - 1 or 2am: work

....someone remind me why I so desperately wanted to work from home again???
I started about 2 years ago, after working as a software engineer for a couple years. I would venture to say it is often more hectic for me than when I worked at an office ie. less time for myself, but I end up having more time for the kids, such as pickup and drop off at school, taking them to dance, etc. and the general ability to enroll them in extra curiculars that they couldn't do before.

Right now I have a standing contract with a friend's company that includes his engineering firm and his helicopter flight training AND charter company which keeps me quite busy, as well as any others that come across the wire on the side of that. I also try as I might to futher myself photographically, which I never have time for and so I don't ever see come to fruition. Maybe one day when I retire *sigh*.

Sometimes I do... if there is work scheduled after office hours or users have problems. Main work is done in the office though, work at home is rather the exception (or should be). And it sometimes is annoying as you can't really draw the line between work and private life....

The software development company that I work for allows me to work from home and an 'as needed' basis. I test software as well as write user manuals. I'm able to access my work desktop and our databases by logging in through a Citrix connection.

While working from home, I have an MSN Instant Message connection with my boss so that we can have access to each other for quick questions and such.

Good Luck finding work. Have you tried guru.com?

I work from home one day a week (Friday and I just got done). I also connect through a secure VPN to my work computer and can do anything from home that I do at the office....I can even answer my work phone on my computer...little do they know I'm in my sweats, haven't combed my hair or brushed my teeth

That's exactly what I'm looking for.
I want my cup of tea sitting on my desk and my dog sitting at my feet!

OMG, you are so busy!!
I am not qualified to do any of the things you mentioned, except drive the kids, shop, clean, cook, etc.... My kids are grown, so I've already done all that.
Thank you Ginger!

Fix software issues? I create them, so that's not for me.
Medical billing, coding and clearance is what I do now, but have to drive so far to do it. How did your friend get started, if you don't mind me asking?
Thanks!!!

I work from home - sometimes wish I didn't because I never really "leave" work and I'm always "on call". I work anywhere from 50-80 hours a week...quite scary indeed!

If you value your sanity, please don't consider a job like mine!
