Very interesting that this topic should hit the board. I was just talking to my cousin who is in the Marines and has been over to Iraq a few times now. He was bit by one of these and said it was quite unpleasant. Not a big spider fan here. Though there are only 3 poisonous species here (Black Widow, Brown Recluse, and ?) I can't tell some of them apart. We commonly have Wolf Spiders which have a similar pattern on their back to the Brown Recluse so it kind of freaks you out sometimes as to "hey, what was that crawling across the floor".
Our golden retriever has been an excellent exterminator. Since getting her a few years ago, our number of spiders sited has dropped significantly. I think Cats are good for that too, though I really don't like cats (don't tell Nerak). |

My BIL and SIL took a trip to Guatemala and then Belize for diving a few months ago and they had a black spider in the room on the ceiling that they described as the size of a small plate or saucer.
They tried throwing bars of soap and other things at it but nothing worked. It finally slithered into a crevice somewhere in the room! I will see them today at a Fathers Day bash and I'll ask them about it but I think that it happened twice but the second one was not as large. |

Oh my god......How gross is that? Why oh why did I have to click on the link??? Thank-god those creepy looking "flesh eaters" live in the desert and not around here....They look like something you'd see in that King Kong movie....Uugghh!
I think if I actually saw one within 10 feet of me I'd probably go into cardiac arrest! |

Anyway, he told me that it was more the size of a DINNER PLATE! and was brown not black and it crawled extremely fast. It was thin with very long legs. After it disappeared, THEY WENT BACK TO SLEEP! They saw it again in the bathroom the next day. My BIL said that he didn't think that the spiders there bothered people and that room must have been his home. Many of them are poisonous though. I believe they they only stayed there one or two nights since they were on their way from Guatemala to go diving in Belize. |
