Anyone here climb Mt. Rainier before?

Or know someone who has? I just took my husband to the airport tonight to fly to Seattle on a 9 day trip to go camping and climb Mt. Rainier. I think he's half boy, half billy goat, and never got the memo that he's a man in his mid 30's.

So now I'm a lonely only at home, but have a quick weekend trip to Playa 6/23-26 to look forward to.

I'd love to hear from anyone with any personal info. about the climb.

Amy, you might contact Donny. Not sure he has climbed it but he lives in the area and might be able to give you any info you might want to hear. I myself have gone up there only to the tourist center for a few hours. But I can tell you it is really beautiful up there (at least when it's not raining and the road closed due to flooding but even then it's impressing).

If it helps you to look at some pics I can offer you mine:

Been to Camp Muir. I worked at Paradise (no joke) at Mt Rainier for 4 years. Know it REALLY well. Please tell me he went with the Guide Service!!! If he's an experienced climber, even Rainier will be a challenge for him. But a wonderful lifetime experience.
I'll wave to hubby for you a couple times a day when I look up and see Rainier. It's cloudy and rainy today so the mountain will be super crappy weather but it's supposed to clear within a couple of days. If he's lucky enough to have a clear day climb, he will get fabulous pics at the summit!!!
I know lot's of the Rangers at the Park so if you need any further info, let me know and I'll hunt up some info for you.
Did he take his cell phone? He can get great cell coverage to call you from the summit

Yep, he & the boys are going with guides...I would have never permitted such an excursion otherwise. They're camping and doing mini-hikes until Wednesday, when they start the official trek with the guide, and on Friday they summit. He has his cell phone so he'll be keeping in touch.

If you have any other good info I can pass on to him, that'd be great. Experienced climber? Hmmm....I don't know. He did a trek in Peru (Machu Picchu (sp?) ) a couple years ago. Not much climbing around these parts though.

Keep me posted re the weather since your info. will most likely be more reliable than weather.com's!

PS: Great pics Andiline!

My husband climbed Rainier in '01 and '02. He was 47 the first time. He made it to the summit in'01. The next year he didn't down enough water on the trip to Muir, so paid for that with leg cramps all night. Didn't attempt the summit that time. I was very nervous both times, but they made it without problems either time. The weather here is supposed to be great this weekend. He will love it. It is one of my husband's things he is most proud of.

I visited Mt. Rainier many years ago, but since no one was chasing me with a big knife or a handgun, I didn't make it too far up the mountain. Far enough that I saw snow, though.

Better them than me, that's all I can say. I'll see you on the beach this Friday, Ms. Ami.

Just read in the Chicago Tribune online that a 29 year old woman has gone missing at Mt. Rainier. She is a concession stand worker who went for a hike after work and never came back. Hope they find her ok.

I looked for that story online but couldn't find it. Can you post a link?

Thanks!

Update, they have found this poor woman's body. She was 22, not 29 years old as I first thought I read. Here's the link to the Chicago Trib article.

Heard from a source today that they may not rule out suicide on this incident...she had been at a party and was really depressed...told her roommate she was going to go for a hike. After living up there for almost 4 years, I can understand depression there...it's like being in Siberia.
The weather is supposed to clear in the next couple of days. The mountain was socked in with clouds today and I checked this website for you:
http://www.nps.gov/mora/index.htm
Check out the webcam of Paradise. It was solid fog today and you could barely see the trees....it's like that a lot. Hubby could end up above the clouds when he is actually on the summit climb. Hope he gets good weather. I waved to him today for you
