We ate at El Fogon twice during our last trip. Delicious meals. And fantastic value! Neither of us speak much spanish so it was a bit of a stretch trying to communicate and figure out what to order on the menu! The spanish/english dictionary definitely came in a bit handy there! But it was worth it and was an adventure in itself! We went to the one across from the Mega.

Here's a question for the experts. Are there 2 locations for El Fagon? The one I saw was on Constituyentes between 25th and 30th near the Mega.

IMHO, you can get great food on fifth. However, you can get food that is just as good if not better if you wander off fifth. The further you get off fifth the cheaper the prices ... mostly. And bonus, you get to see a slice of Playa that is not completely tourist centric. I love the food carts and the little barbeque places where you buy whole chickens. If I can improve my spanish a bit more, I might even know for sure what I am ordering

5th avenue has many great restaurants with a great overall dinner experience. They also have many restaurants with average food and high prices-total tourist traps. The off 5th restaurants discussed on this web page have excellent food and, for me, I love them. However, many people simply would have no interest in eating there regardless of the quality of food because of their appearance which is much different than other tourist towns. You will have to take a look at the location and restaurant and decide for yourself. I like restaurants off 5th but you can't find the Glass Bar, Babes or Media Luna off 5th and they are some of my favorites. A good way to experiment is sit down, order a drink and small plate, and if you like what your eating, stay and order more.

On my last trip I challenged Heather to prove me wrong (she advocated El Fogon) and she was completely successful. First of all, the bean soup at El Fogon was absolutely delicious. Luckily she and her beau were sharing, so there was more than enough for everyone at the table. If that weren't enough, I also ordered the "El Fogoncito" which is a sampler platter. It came with bean soup, queso fundio, guac, grilled onion, and grilled chorizo, bacon, ham and pork chop. Granted - a heart attack on a plate - but WOW what a meal! Four hours later (seriously!) I was convinced... El Fogon rocked my world too!!! A four hour meal for 7 people with LOTS of margaritas, beer, etc was only about 650 pesos. Try getting THAT much food at THAT price anywhere on 5th Avenue!!! While the al pastor at El Pastorcito may edge out El Fogon slightly (but it may just be a question of how busy they are, etc) the overall menu and other items makes El Fogon my top pick between the two.

HEATHER - You were right. I was wrong. (And you will NEVER hear me say that again!!!)
El Pastorcito rules.

Its the one where the kitchen is often belching smoke, and they give you plenty of time to enjoy your surroundings whilst the food is prepared.

Its right across the street from the north location of El Fogon on 30th Ave.

FWIW, I think the al pastor at Pastorcito is generally better, but I like the overall menu better at el Fogon...
