Thumbs up

If you like Borrega, and you are in Cancun, there is a great restaurant on the other side of the road from Home Depot. I could smell the delicious aroma from the Home Depot carpark! Been there often with several friends (foreign and local) who raved about it. My favorite dish is the soup with shredded lamb (sopa con carne), salsas, vegetables, etc. It is a very filling meal in itself and for only 45 pesos, incredible value for money. Parking can be a problem as there are only 4 places, but if you are brave enough to handle the 6-lane main road, there are plenty of spaces across the road in the Home Depot/Soriana carpark. - or get a cab for a dollar!

Yep! Been there, and they're GOOD! Ditto everything above.

There's a relatively new (2-3 months?) borrego BBQ place in Playa on the east-side frontage road of the Carretara Federal going north just past the Pemex station on the corner of Constituyentes (Pemex, then a vacant lot, then two side-by-side taco restaurants - the first has a red half-wall with "barbacoa borrego" written on it. The tacos are small compared to the place next door, which has hand-made tacos, a large selection of taco fillings, condiments, etc., and is generally better overall - but if it's borrego you're looking for (and I am looking, about once a week), try the red-front place - it's not nearly as good as the earlier borrego restaurant on the west side of the hiway just south of Juarez that went out of business, but it is borrego, and it's reasonably tasty. Both side-by-side taco places (dfferent owners) close around 2 pm, so they're "early lunch" places. You can also buy BBQ borrego "to go" by the kilo. No beer, unfortunately, but you can probably get some at the Extra store next to the Pemex and discretely drink it in the taco places in a non-transparent plastic cup (also from the Extra store). Bon provecho!

Thank you for the tip. I went to that place recently, and it happens to be the main branch of La Borrega. I was told by a waitress that La Borrega in Playa was open in society with a partner, but they decided to close it because sales went down due to the construction of the overpass.

Very good!

After visiting many barbacoa places in Playa to find a replacement for the now-closed La Borrega, I would say that my favorite place is a changarro located on 30 Avenue just in front of Doña Mary (Calle 30?).

They sell barbacoa by the taco or by the kilo (1/4 kg, 1/2 kg, etc.), and consomé.

However, they only sell it on Saturdays and Sundays, and some times it's sold out before 11:30 AM! Please note is not a restaurant, there are no tables, but you can seat at a bar (inside and outside).

At least when you eat in, you'd get free tortillas, salsa, cilantro, onion and nopales. They don't sell beer.

Let us know your opinions if you visit the place

This is called El Huerto and is on the corner of Calle 28 and Avenida 30. I visit here probably 3x per week (it's one block from my apt.) and generally eat their order of tinga empanadas (3 for 20 pesos with lettuce and crema). My friend Geoff lives for the barbacoa and we visit at least once on the weekends when they have it.

The place is FAST, friendly, super-clean, and inexpensive. A small fresh squeezed grapefruit juice is just 20 pesos, so for under 4 usd, I've got my breakfast.
