Using the search function in the tool bar above should yield plenty of results and may answer several of your questions regarding Grand Coco:
Here are a few previous threads on the resort:

Great links, Dallas (and if I weren't so darn lazy, I'd have done it! )

Cortez: We've done larger AI's in the past (Iberostar Tucan/Quetzal in Playacar), but we're looking forward to the smaller, more intimate aspect of Grand Coco Bay. From what I've read from others, it looks like we'll all be happy with our choice.

But again... please leave the place standing when you leave!!

If you're facing the ocean, hold up your right arm out and point. That's south.

A Map Chick Map of Playa Del Carmen (www.mapchick.com) will really help you get your bearings of your location and the proximity of other resorts, restaurants, and points of interest.
I am not sure what is immediately south of Grand Coco in the way of resorts, but I believe the next major one you would run into along the beach would be the Shangri-La Caribe (where the beach webcam is located)

Just to give you a little perspective, check this out. It's an aerial view of the northern side of Playa (GCB is listed with its former name, The Reef Cocobeach). You can navigate the maps by clicking on the arrows. Don't know exactly how old the pics are, but it'll give you a handle on what's where.
