Royal Porto Real

Does anyone know how soundproof the rooms are? I am a very light sleeper and have stayed in hotels where you can hear every conversation in the next room.

Don't know about royal but at the Gran next door I heard everything the people next door were saying and I am quite sure they heard everything I was doing.

Don't worry, we never had any problems. We found it to be very quiet.
These builings are constructed of concrete.

We stayed at Royal Porto April 29 to May 6th. The bed is up against the middle wall of the room so noise did not bother us. The only suggestion I would have is get top floor as we have been on 2nd floor each trip there and when people on floor above move their chairs on the floor it does make a terrible noise.(pick up the chair please!)We loved our stay there, service very good, food very good, beach very good. Plan to stay there on our future trips.

We stayed at the Royal in January and loved it there. Very quiet as far as hearing from the other rooms. We had a room that faced the Gran Porto and heard alot of noise early in the morning from all the tour busses that line the road between the two. If I got a room there I would suggest to ask to be moved.

As far as tips...make your dinner reservations asap, they fill quickly. The Italian restaurant as the Gran Porto (which you can use) is wonderful. Ask to sit outside!
Enjoy!!!

Invest in a good quality solid-state white noise machine. Mine cost about $60, and I use it at home all the time (I have upstairs neighbors, one of whom is clomping around early in AM and one who likes to clomp around just when I'm trying to get to sleep at night), and I take the white noise machine whenever I travel to drown out traffic noise, people noise , and it even helps with those damn Playa birdies who like to sit in a tree outside the room at 5:45 AM and SCREEEEEAM at the top of their little birdie lungs!! Bought mine on eBay, and it comes with its own travel pouch.

Get used to it at home first, and then when you travel, you'll fall fast asleep no matter where you are.

If you want more info, PM me and I'll give you the brand name, etc.

That is actually a very good idea. At Shangri-La the units are separated 2 story bungalows, so you have 1 neighbor either above or below you. The unit below us was empty. At home, We use a sound machine with the white noise (Homedics brand $25 at Target/Walgreens, etc) and it works great. BUT we did not take it with us as we figured we would not need it. Those birds you mentioned did screech and flap (or make some sound that mimics rustling plastic) on several mornings bright and early (as they perch on the thatch roof). Thought I was going to have to climb out to see if I could catch/strangle one on our second day there.
The sound machine is nice (white, lays flat for easy packing, several sound options) and runs on DC or batteries.
